Often a more serious, closed style of Pomerol during the En Primeur tastings, and this starts with subdued aromatics. Give it time in the glass and I suggest waiting a good few years before drinking, as there are firm tannins here, and black fruits with liqourice root spice. This may take a few years to reveal its Pomerol joy, but there is plenty of have confidence in. 23.4 hl/ha, Nicolas and Elise de Bailliencourt now at the estate, the next generation of the family. The 2024 Gazin has a light, tertiary bouquet with blackberry and raspberry fruit. This needs a little more vigor but it is nicely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannins, a healthy dash of white pepper and a structured, grippier finish than its peers. I appreciate the freshness in this Pomerol and it should show well once in bottle, but this needs more substance. A couple of samples show some dryness on the finish. A classic Pomerol with chocolate, hazelnuts and dark fruit. Medium-bodied with juicy fruit. Creamy texture at the end. Rating: 93-94 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2025)

90 M 10 CF Very ripe and concentrated black fruit aromas with some spices from oak, cinnamon and cardamom. Palate-coating depth and with some lovely black fruit characters, fine tannins supported by excellent acidity and the beginnings of silkiness. Long finish. For the mid to long term, this will be an excellent insight into the qualities of what was possible in this tricky vintage. Rating: 93 Rod Smith MW, www.timatkin.com (Apr 2025)

Château Gazin

It is said that Château Gazin occupies the site of an old Knights of St John hospital that tended to pilgrims on their journey to Santiago de Compostella - a legend that is reflected in the cross on the label and in the name of the second wine, l'Hospitalet de Gazin. During the 19th Century, Gazin was one of the most highly regarded estates in Pomerol. The Bailliencourt family came into the estate by marriage in the early years of the 20th Century but, sadly, their tenure has mostly been of a château in decline. However, the estate's inheritance by the dynamic Nicolas de Bailliencourt in the 1980's has completely turned Gazin around and, once again, it is one of the châteaux to watch. The machine harvesters, bought as recently as 1979, were disposed of, a new chais was built, the second wine was introduced to allow stricter selection for the grand vin, and the services of Pomerol guru Jean-Pierre Moueix were engaged. The wine is typically 90% Merlot and spends 18 months in barrique, of which 50% are new wood.
