CHÂTEAU HAUT MARBUZET

2024 Saint Estèphe

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Estèphe
ABV 13%

An old school estate in an old school year, deep ruby colour, good depth through the palate, and the aromatics are a little leafy but with concentration, tannic structure, and you can imagine that it will soften and elongate over ageing. One to watch. Harvest from September 5, Henri Duboscq is still very much in charge, even though his son Bruno does most of the day to day work. Drinking range: 2028 - 2040 Rating: 88 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2025)

The 2024 Haut-Marbuzet has quite an exuberant bouquet with orange rind-infused red berry fruit, hints of violet and peony that emerge with time. The palate is grippy and medium-bodied with grainy tannins and a fresh, minerally finish. It will need two or three years just to shave its edges, but there is energy here. Drinking range: 2029 - 2042 Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2025)

55 CS 35 M 5 CF 5 PV Some chalky smoke and lapsang-souchong tea aromas on the nose with black fruit underneath. Terrifically of its appellation! Supple and finely extracted tannins with lovely depth of red fruit to support. Deliciously juicy finish Rating: 91 Rod Smith MW, www.timatkin.com (Apr 2025)

Château Haut Marbuzet

Hervé Dubosq purchased this estate in 1952 and it is now run by his son Henri and his sons Bruno and Hugues. The hamlet of Marbuzet is situated just north of the Pauillac border, next to the vineyards of Cos d’Estournel. Plantings in the 61 hectares under vine are 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. It is this high proportion of Merlot that gives Haut Marbuzet its silky, seductive character. The Dubosqs prefer to plough rather than use herbicides and destem all of the fruit prior to fermentation. It was once Cru Bourgeois Exceptionel before the classification was abolished, but the wines are frequently better than cru classes from elsewhere in the Medoc.
