There was no botrytis recorded here, which is absolutely remarkable. Claire Villars-Lurton said that this was wholly due to their Demeter-certified practices. While Merlot suffered slightly with mildew, Petit Verdot was quite resistant, and Cabernet took the strain in the blend. The nose here is superb, and there was no need for chaptalisation. The ripe tannins and gentle extraction mean this is a dark, spicy, gourmand style with innate balance and lip-smacking freshness. 17+/20 Rating: 17+ Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (May 2025)

The 2024 La Gurgue was cropped at 12 hl/ha because of the mildew. Claire Villars-Lurton told me that it was difficult to maintain the cover crop that grew out of control (as evidenced by some photos). The 2024 has a strong pencil-lead-scented nose, actually quite Pauillac-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied, quite strict and linear with light tannins and a lean finish. Hopefully it will gain more flesh during its barrel maturation in a combination of demi-muids, foudres and barriques. Drinking range: 2027 - 2037 Rating: 85-87 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2025)
60 CS 25 M 15 PV 12.1% Bright purple and vivid fruit with some sweet-pea and thyme. Inviting. Deliciously fruity with good freshness and light supple tannins and should be approachable in relative youth and afford good value drinking. All the Petit Verdot that could be was used. For the Merlot, however, only 6 hl/ha. Rating: 89 Rod Smith MW, www.timatkin.com (Apr 2025)
The 2024 La Gurgue is still coming together in élevage. It offers very good depth, even if the tannins need time to fully integrate. Yields were punishingly low at 12HL per hectare. Claire Villars-Lurton chose not to chaptalize the 2024. Time in the glass brings out pretty floral overtones that complement a core of red-toned fruit. There's good potential here. Drinking range: 2026 - 2034 Rating: 90-92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2025)
Château La Gurgue
Despite having two former Mayors of Margaux among previous owners, and a location right in the heart of the appellation, Château La Gurgue was not marked by particular greatness until recent times, registering not more than Cru Bourgeois status in the infamous 1855 classification. Now, however, in common ownership with Château Haut Bages Libéral and Château Ferrière and under the benign stewardship of Claire Villars-Lurton, La Gurgue has rightfully assumed position as a property to watch in the always popular appellation of Margaux. 10ha of vineyard, planted with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, abut in many places the vineyards of the illustrious Château Margaux. Certified both organic and biodynamic.
