The 2024 Phélan Ségur is an absolute delight. Dark and ample, the 2024 offers up a compelling mix of black cherry, leather, game, incense, licorice, gravel and pipe tobacco. All the elements are so well balanced. The blend is 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, in other words, a very high percentage of Cabernet. That comes through nicely in the wine's aromatic finish. Phélan Ségur is shaping up to be one of the highlights of the year. Tasted four times. Drinking range: 2028 - 2039 Rating: 92-94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2025)

Austere opening, you feel the shape and length of the tannins, well placed and skilfully constructed, with slim Cabernet floral rose petals and peony notes alongside savoury bilberry fruit, touch of liquorice bud and fresh juice on this finish. Finessed, drawn out, expertly constructed. Harvest 30 September to 14 October. 30 hl/ha. 55% new oak. 3.72 pH, Veronique Dausse director. Tasted twice. Drinking range: 2030 - 2044 Rating: 92 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2025)

A structured and tannic wine that frames the fruit nicely, with a medium body and a juicy finish. Some lemon character at the end. Rating: 93-94 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2025)

68 CS 30 M 2 PV 13.5% Another example of St Estèphe providing the antidote to the woes of the vintage is this wine from Phélan Ségur - bright floral and graphite aromas with some toast and cedar. Fruity acidity in the mouth with the right amount of tannins to provide balance and longevity, although this will be approachable in relative youth for sure. Rating: 91 Rod Smith MW, www.timatkin.com (Apr 2025)

Château Phélan Ségur

Château Phélan-Ségur is a Cru Bourgeois St. Estèphe property that produces textbook meaty, solid and long-lived St. Estèphes. It was bought by Xavier Gardinier in 1985 and is now run by his sons, Thierry and Laurent. Phélan-Ségur's 66 hectares of vineyards are well-sited near the Grionde estuary and lies on well drained gravel soils. The vineyards are bordered by those of Château Montrose and Château Calon-Ségur. Phélan-Ségur's wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (30%) and Cabernet Franc (10%). The grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats and the wine is then matured in oak barriques (30% new) for 15 months. Phélan-Ségur usually requires at least 5-7 years of bottle ageing to show at its best and the best vintages can continue improving for up to 15 years.
