Tiny touch of reduction on the opening moments of this wine, then slowly uncurls, lovely rose petals, elderflower, raspbery and redcurrant, with a kiss of grilled sandalwood. You can really track the evolution of Quintus at this point, as it takes on more of the character of its location up on the limestone plateau, and this is a good quality wine. 35hl/h yield, 39% new oak. Unlike many Right Bank, this is the final blend. Mariette Veyssière technical director, working alongside Jean-Pierre Masclef. The 2024 Quintus is streets ahead of the second and third wines on the nose, with pretty black cherry and blueberry fruit, a little Margaux-like in style thanks to the violet scent. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid black fruit mixed with blood orange and crushed stone towards the finish. Touches of cracked black pepper and cumin linger on the aftertaste. Very fine. Drinking range: 2029 - 2045 Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2025)
Good depth for this vintage, with lots of brightness. Medium-bodied with a good amount of fine tannins and lots of bright, juicy fruit. Dark cherries and a touch of fine spices. Fresh and friendly, with good texture and length. A classic vintage with lighter weight and very little perception of sweetness. 77.2% merlot and 22.8% cabernet franc. Rating: 93-94 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2025)
The 2024 Quintus is gracious, elegant and polished. Spice, tobacco, cedar and an exotic touch of blood orange give the 2024 lovely aromatic presence to match its mid-weight personality. There is a touch of new oak, but that should not be an issue with élevage. Here, too, the balance is very fine. Drinking range: 2028 - 2044 Rating: 93-95 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2025)
Château Quintus
Domaines Clarence Dillon (Haut Brion) bought, in 2011, what used to be Château Tertre Daugay, a Grand cru Classé Saint Emilion. The name was chosen following the Roman tradition of calling the fifth child Quintus. The property was originally about 16 hectares of vines on a promontory on the south-west corner of the Saint Emilion plateau, with vines on the limestone of the plateau itself and sloping down on all sides on clay over the limestone base, looking over the Dordogne valley.
In 2013, the Dillon family acquired Château L'Arrosée which they include in the production of Chateau Quintus. This has expanded the property to 28 hectares of vines on a gently sloping plateau 68 meters above sea level in the south west of Saint Emilion. Soil type varies from limestone in the north of the property, to clay and gravel in the south. Merlot represents 66% of the vines planted; Cabernet Franc (26%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (8%) make up the rest.
There are two wines, Château Quintus and its second wine 'Le Dragon de Quintus'.
