DAME DE MONTROSE

2024 Saint Estèphe Château Montrose

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Estèphe
ABV 13%

This has dark fruit character, leafy but nuanced and sculpted, lovely savoury mouthwatering quality on the finish, At Montrose they did some leaf removal even in early June at fruit set, and left grass throughout the vineyard all the way through the season to increase competition, and did some tidying up at the very beginning of veraison to remove any that were clearly a little behind schedule - so basically just had to be extremely reactive at all times. The yield was 38hl/h after farming entirely organically. Harvest 23 September to 8 October. 20% large oak casks, 15% new oak. Drinking range: 2029 - 2040 Rating: 92 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2025)

73 Merlot, 20 Cabernet Sauvignon, 4 Petit Verdot, 3 Cabernet Franc: 20% foudre with 15% new oak: 38 hl/ha: 13.2% press wine

Juicy, direct, and pristinely clean, with silky fruit, lovely volume, and enticing exoticism, this wine is the light-hearted side of the Montrose story. While the fruit notes are amazingly pure, the finish is loaded with minerality and brightness, and the tannins wait patiently until the finish appears. When they do, they are raw, active and refreshingly delicious. 17.5/20 QP

The 2024 La Dame de Montrose—raised in 15% new oak, 20% foudres and 2% amphora—has a straightforward, relatively light bouquet with blackberry, hints of black olive and light gravelly scents. The palate is medium-bodied with sharp acidity on the entry, balanced but just a little austere towards the second half. It needs to muster more fruité on the finish, but at least displays freshness and classicism. Drinking range: 2028 - 2037 Rating: 88-90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2025)

73 M 20 CS 4 PV 3 CF 13.2% Plenty of rich blue fruit and spice aromas. Very St Estèphe, Cabernet Sauvignon, and inviting. Plush deep fruit in the mouth with great fruit weight and extract but no hard or rigid tannins. Fresh acidity and good length. Really terrific effort and not at all 'of the vintage'. A very rigorous selection and sorting regime from start to finish was necessary to accomplish all this, although the yields managed nevertheless to buck the trend at 32h/ha for the organic vineyards. Rating: 91 Rod Smith MW, www.timatkin.com (Apr 2025)

Château Montrose

St Estèphe Deuxième cru 1855 Wine production St Estèphe developed much later than further south in the Haut-Médoc - indeed, the vineyards of Château Montrose were not planted until 1815, when it was then part of the Calon-Ségur estate. Only 40 years later, not only had Montrose seperated from its parent, it had surpassed it, being one of only two St Estèphe estates to be awarded 2nd Growth status in the 1855 classification. Montrose sits nearer the river than Cos d'Estournel on classic Haut-Médoc gravel soil - the last outcrop as you head north. The 65ha of vines are 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The Grand Vin spends 18 months in wood (70% new). A second wine was introduced in 1983 - La Dame de Montrose - aged in wood for 12 months (20% new). Montrose is a noted performer in weaker vintages, possibly because of a generous micro-climate which allows slightly earlier picking than most of the Haut-Médoc. The wines age brilliantly.
