MADAME DE BEAUCAILLOU

2024 Haut Médoc Château Ducru Beaucaillou

Grapes Cab Sauv, Petit Verdot, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
ABV 13.27%

63 Merlot, 34 Cabernet Sauvignon, 3 Petit Verdot: 20% new oak: 13.27% alc: 3.60 pH: 84 IPT: Harvested between 27 September and 10 October Clean, bright, energetic, and pristine, this is a gleamingly fresh and beautifully balanced wine with tangy acidity and rather impressive balance. Rebellious cherries and a punkish finish make this a lovely non-conformist, and I love its raw amaro notes, Nebbiolo-like tannins and carmine hue. Madame has attitude, and it suits her perfectly. Rating: 17.5 Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (May 2025)

Quite a scented nose of minerals and pure fruit. Medium-bodied on the palate, with chewy tannins and a tight-grained finish. Good structure and length, even if it’s not polished. Linear in the middle. 63% merlot, 34% cabernet sauvignon and 3% petit verdot. Rating: 91-92 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2025)

Beautiful clarity of fruit, delivering lean but vivid cherry and spiced savoury plum, with tannins that are present but not overly tight. Harvested around 35hl/h yield, then ended up in the bottle at 20-25hl/h yield, giving you some idea of the sorting needed to tease out the best wines of the vintage. Increased footprint of vines, with 20ha added from the purchase of Chateau Doroux, in Cussac Fort Médoc, but still the final amount saw around 50% of the usual production. 11% press wine. 3.6 pH. harvest 22 September to 10 October, 20% new oak. Drinking range: 2030 - 2042 Rating: 89 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2025)

The 2024 Madame de Beaucaillou includes an additional 20 hectares rented in Cussac, although the volume is unchanged due to sorting. This aged in 20% new oak. This has a forward, rounded, sensual bouquet due to the contribution of the Merlot, lending it a Right Bank allure. The palate is medium-bodied with a bright opening. Tensile with fine sapidity, this just misses a little sustain on the finish. Otherwise, it should drink well over the next decade. Drinking range: 2027 - 2037 Rating: 87-89 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2025)

Château Ducru Beaucaillou

St Julien Deuxième cru 1855 When the Beychevelle estate was broken up in 1642, in order to pay off the debts of the deceased owner, it gave birth to three Châteaux - Beychevelle, Branaire-Ducru and Ducru-Beaucaillou. Château Ducru Beaucaillou was so named because of the quality lent to the wine by the large pebbles in the soil - the "good pebbles" being "beau caillou" (although it was originally "Maucaillou", "bad pebbles" not being much use for any other kind of agriculture). In 1795, the estate was purchased by Bertrand Ducru, and the name was complete. The early years on the 20th Century were not kind to Ducru-Beaucaillou, but salvation was on hand with its purchase by Francis Borie in 1941. Apart from some problems with TCA during the late 1980's, the tenure of the Borie family has been a time of continuing improvement at Ducru-Beaucaillou. Today, Francis' grandson Bruno Borie heads up the estate. The Borie family also own Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste and Château Haut Batailley. The 75ha of vineyard are planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot have, apparently, left the blend. The Grand Vin spends 18 to 20 months in wood, with the proportion of new wood varying between vintages. A second wine was introduced in 1995 - La Croix de Beaucaillou. Also produced at Ducru-Beaucaillou is Château Lalande-Borie from vineyard purchased from Château Lagrange in 1970 which, although it could perfectly legally be absorbed into Château Ducru Beaucaillou, has always been produced as a seperate wine.
