While M. Vincent Millet compares this wine to the 2017 or the 2021, it is in a different league, indeed, dimension. He readily admits that it is a more lovable, perfumed wine with a more pliable and dynamic attitude. It feels like a new dawn for Le Marquis, and while I have been a lifelong fan of this portfolio, I find myself liking them all with increased momentum as the years pass. But Le Marquis often falls between two stools, and while this is a ‘new’ model of wine with more plum and cherry and not as much blackberry and blackcurrant, this is simply a factor of the vintage. I can see Le Marquis finally finding its character – it is demonstrative, unbowing and unapologetic. Of course, the ripe Merlot in this blend has made itself heard in this wine as the grand Cab was elevated, making it a different style of Le Marquis than many and marking it as its singular expression of this estate’s soils. The timbre and brightness of the fruit catch the attention (and not the blend), and in this respect, the silkiness, volume and crispness of the finish make it unwaveringly compelling. This is perhaps not a wine that EP buyers might flock to, given the noise during this season, but it is a genuinely delicious creation that will bring singular pleasure. Clearly skilful construction of the wines here, with precision and balance. Austerity on the finish, as is classic in Cabernet-dominant wines in 2024, with emphasis on cassis bud and slate, very pretty. 3.55 pH. 45hl/ha yield, 20% new oak. Harvest 23 September to 9 October. The 2024 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur, matured in 20% new French oak for a planned 17 months, is missing some fruit concentration on the nose. Therefore, it comes across a little austere, especially when compared to recent vintages. The palate is simple with rounded tannins, fine acidity, light spiced black fruit and touches of brown spices on the finish. But it just lacks some bite and complexity, so this is one for earlier drinking. Drinking range: 2027 - 2032 Rating: 86-88 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2025)
This is a very refined, juicy wine that almost feels complete, with aromas of red and black berries and touches of incense and graphite. Firm tannins show nice tension, with more fruit on the medium-bodied palate. Quite juicy and long at the end. 63% merlot and 37% cabernet sauvignon. Château Calon Ségur
St Estèphe Troisième cru 1855 Château Calon Ségur is the northernmost Grand Cru estate classified in 1855, sitting just north of the village of St Estèphe. It was once part, as the name suggests, of the vast holdings of the Ségur family, owners amongst others of Lafite and Latour. In the 18th Century, Nicolas-Alexandre Ségur is said to have remarked "I make my wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart is in Calon", and the label bears his heart to this day. In the early years of the 19th Century, the then owner Etienne Dumoulin became interested in an underdeveloped part of the estate, which was cleared and planted with vines. Such was the quality that the rump of Calon-Ségur was sold off, and Etienne's new estate went on to become Château Montrose. Calon-Ségur came into the hands of the Gasqueton family in 1894, and it is still owned by the family. A solid performer, especially recently, the Grand Vin is made with a relatively high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon (as high as 90% in some vintages). The vineyards are 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc and the wines spend 18 months in wood. The second wine is Marquis de Calon.
