CHARLES HEIDSIECK

Brut Réserve NV

Grapes Chardonnay
Colour White
Origin France, Champagne
ABV 12%

The NV Charles Heidsick is a blend of approximately egual quantities of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. About 40% of the blend is reserve wines (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay), which will have already been aged in vat for between five and fifteen years. This gives an outstanding depth and complexity to this cuvée, with fresher fruit notes finely balanced with subtle dried fruit and smoky, yeasty notes from prolonged age on the lees. L&S (Apr 2018)

40% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir, 20% Pinot Meunier with 40% reserves. The 2016 base has really picked up since release, and is showing more of the true 'Charles' character that lovers have been spoilt with over a decade where the Brut Reserve saw – not entirely by design – extended lees ageing. There is a voluptuousness to the palate, silky candied fruits and toasted almond, lifted with the energy of grilled citrus, cushioned with praline and red fruit tart. Always a good idea to give these wines a little time on cork. 2017 base also 92 points. Tom Hewson Rating: 92 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com (Dec 2022)

Tasty and easygoing, Heidsieck's NV Brut Réserve is a good choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. Warm toasty notes complement a core of orchard fruit, spice and vanillin in this inviting entry-level offering. Disgorged in 2018. Drinking range: 2020 - 2025 Rating: 88 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Nov 2020)

Low-key nose but lots of layers on the palate. Really first class. Lacy texture and intriguing, tightly laced and embroidered. Very well done! Good tension. Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jul 2019)

Champagne Charles Heidsieck

Founded in 1851 by 29 year old Charles Camille Heidsieck, the original 'Champagne Charlie'. Charles Heidsieck was the very first champagne merchant to travel to America, and is credited with popularising champagne over in the USA.

In 1862, Heidsieck decided to invest in cellars dating from the 2nd century, rather than buying land for vineyards - henceforth placing more importance on the careful selection, ageing and blending of the wines, whilst leaving the viticulture to the experts in that field.

Current cellarmaster Cyril Brun is credited with reviving the quality of the wines here.
