It was a moment of pure serendipity that inspired this blog. During a recent socially distanced visit to the office, one of us said ‘you know what I had the other night that was beautiful? R茅mi聽Niero’s Saint Joseph‘ and was met by a ‘you’re joking – so did I!‘.
Saint Joseph may not be the most famous name in the Northern Rhone; expansion of the vineyard area in the 70s and 80s has resulted in a varying level of quality. Fear not though, this is one of the finest examples we have come across.
Domaine R茅mi聽Niero聽is one of the original聽domaines聽of the聽Condrieu聽appellation. Today聽the third generation are at the helm here, continuing the long tradition of making crystalline, pure wines. The聽domaine聽has recently fully converted to organic farming and聽this聽care translates through to their pristine wines.
This wine is in a beautiful place right now. It is so sleek and sophisticated with a gorgeous core of fruit and violets,聽and聽a lovely streak of acidity throughout. An undercurrent of peppery, smoky, grilled meats really adds to the complexity and entices you to go back for another sip.
This 2017 vintage is singing currently, and with just a handful of 6-packs remaining,聽and the powerful 2018 vintage in the wings, we implore you to聽pop into one of the shops or order on our website and聽snaffle some of this聽before it’s gone.
2017 SAINT JOSEPH Bois Prieur Domaine R茅mi Niero
‘Light purple in the glass. Some smoky notes of grilled meat and dark roasted fig along with blueberry compote. Pronounced acidity and soft rounded tannins. It has a very cooling almost menthol palate with subtle fig and smoked meat. Very long in the mouth and dominated by the cooling menthol sensation on the finish.‘ Alistair Cooper MW – www.JancisRobinson.com
