Fresh and pure, interesting nuanced flavours, Fine. Slightly less rich and sweet than some in 2003, it makes up for the sheer power with a succulent interest which builds nicely to a long pure finish. L&S (Mar 2005)

The 2003 Lafaurie-Peyraguey has demonstrated some bottle variation in the past, although this example was positive. Deeper in color than many recent vintages, it has a gorgeous, expressive bouquet with scents of manuka honey, acacia, marmalade and subtle marine-like aromas that should be applauded for their precision given the growing season. The palate is medium-bodied and unctuous in texture, well balanced and poised, with quince and mandarin vying for attention toward the finish. A residue of spice lingers on the aftertaste. Excellent. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at home. Drinking range: 2019 - 2045 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Aug 2019)

The 2003 has a deep amber/golden color. The nose is typical of the 2003 Sauternes with marmalade, orange peel, peach skin, touches of sea spray developing with time. There is good vigor and the aromatics are very open. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity considering the vintage: quince, mandarin, Chinese five spice and bitter orange towards the finish. This is one of the best 2003 Sauternes out there. Drinking range: 2014 - 2029 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2014)

Yellow-gold. Knockout nose combines apricot jam, peach, white plum and spicy, vanillin oak. Lush and fat with fruit; opulent and seamless. Wonderfully concentrated flavors of peach, nectarine and spices, with a whiff of menthol adding complexity. Fat and sweet but with lovely freshness and lift; in fact, this is showing more shape and thrust than it did from barrel a year ago. Finishes long and spicy, with very strong fruit. This is already delicious. Rating: 92 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jul 2006)

Château Lafaurie Peyraguey

Sauternes Premier Cru 1855 This was originally a fortification built at least as long ago as the 13th Century. By 1618, it was the home of Sieur Raymond Peyraguey. The vineyard business was developed by the Baron de Pichard, who bought the estate in 1742. Unfortunately for him, he lost his head in the Revolution and his château and vineyards were sold to a M. Lafaurie. The first half of the 19th Century saw Lafaurie-Peyraguey's reputation rise from nearly unknown to being ranked 3rd, behind ChâteauLa Tour Blanche and near neighbour Château d'Yquem in 1855. In 1879 a small portion of the estate was didvided off to become Château Clos Haut-Peyraguey. In 1917, Lafaurie-Peyraguey was bought by Désiré Cordier, who owned it until they sold to the Suez Group in 1984. The 40ha of vineyard are planted with 90% Semillon, 8% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle. The grapes are hand-picked and the wine fermented in wood, before ageing for 18 to 20 months.
