Initially reticent, this is a wine that slowly but surely emerges from its shell like a wallflower at the disco. Decant it. We're in the vicinity of Margaux here, a blend of mainly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon which is open-knit but dense, opening up to show dark fruits, roasted pepper and elegant likft on the finish. 2013-2016 Rating: 89 Peter Richards MW (Jan 2014)

The nose has a fleshy sweetness and the palate is packed with ripe cassis and black cherry. The tannins feel ripe and this combined with the richness of the fruit gives the palate a supple fleshiness. 2018-30 Rating: 88-91 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (Dec 2013)

Another of my favorite estates from the southern part of the Medoc, Macau, this Haut-Medoc cru bourgeois is a blend of 54% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot. The alcohol was 14% and the wine bottled unfined and unfiltered by its consulting oenologist, the brilliant Claude Gros. Wonderfully dark ruby/purple in color, with loads of sweet berry fruit as well as hints of licorice and charcoal, the wine displays a lush texture, medium to full body, and the vintage’s tell-tale ripeness, high glycerin and silky texture. Drink it over the next 5-6 years. Rating: 90 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Sept 2012)

Château Cambon la Pelouse

One of the longest-standing producers with exports to England dating back to the end of the 17th Century, the 38 hectare Château Cambon La Pelouse contributed substantially in the past to building the reputation in France and abroad of Médoc wines. The 35 hectare estate is on the outskirts of Macau and counts the Margaux estates of Giscours and Cantemerle as neighbours. With an average annual production of 250,000 bottles, the estate is planted 52% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot to a vine density of 7,000 vines per hectare with an average age of 30 years for the vines. The terroir is composed of sandy gravels which provides effective drainage. This ensures a consistent production of elegant medium-bodied wines which have been praised by Robert Parker as “one of my favorite estates from the southern part of the Medoc”.
