CHÂTEAU TRONQUOY LALANDE

2009 Saint Estèphe

Grapes Petit Verdot, Cab Sauv, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Estèphe
ABV 14%

42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 51% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot. 40% new wood. Tasted at Montrose, whose team are responsible for this property as well, after its excellent second wine, Tronquoy de Sainte Anne, which (oddly in the vintage) had a higher proporton of Cabernet. Riper, finer tannins in the first wine, with a more sophisticated fruit. Gorgeous, rich, densely-packed and yet freshly-flowing serious Saint Estephe. Possible not quite the joie-de-vivre of the very best, but at what I assume to be it's price level, this could be a terrific bargain. Rating: 91 L&S (Apr 2010)

Old school Tronquoy, this is tasty, easy to drink, well balanced and great value, full on Left Bank character, not hugely concentrated but has spirit, juice and lift, along with fresh brambled fruits, cocoa bean and mint leaf on the finish. Drinking range: 2024 - 2038 Rating: 93 Jane Anson, Decanter (Oct 2024)

There is a floral charm to the nose seemingly quite light but this is deceptive as the palate has richness of flavour. Red fruits intermingle with the black their freshness balancing the richer cassis and blackberry and giving a racy feel to the back palate. 2020-40 Rating: 89-93 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (Dec 2013)

From the expanding, under-construction Ch Montrose stable. 64% of production. 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 51% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot. 46 hl/ha. Minerals and opulence and lots of charm. Sinewy and exciting and depth of flavour but definitely St-Estèphe. Real vivacity. Very luscious in the middle. Very long and satisfying. GV? (16.5+) Drink 2015-2025 Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2010)

Château Tronquoy

Since being established in 1791, Chateau Tronquoy (they dropped the Lalande in 2018) was one of the very first vineyards of the Saint Estephe appellation. From the outset its founder was a proudly independent spirit, and François Tronquoy refused to take part in the 1855 classification.
Today this exceptional vineyard runs to 30 hectares in a single block, running down to the banks of the Gironde estuary. It is a terroir that proudly abuts some of the greatest properties in the area, sited on the celebrated Terrace 3 - which also has some of Cos d'Estournel's vines, some of Lafite's vineyards and of course 'big brother' Chateau Montrose's vines. They have developed a very thoughtful approach to their work in the vineyard, and the estate was certified organic from the 2024 vintage onwards. This is just part of their strong commitment to biodiversity which has seen the development of 800 meters of hedgerows, 100 new birdhouses, 100 bat shelters and 6 beehives.
The estate is owned and the wine is produced by the same team that is responsible for Chateau Montrose.
