Delicious. This swanky, classy, biscuity and toasty fizz shows all the hallmarks of the best of English fizz, and is all the more helped by this 2009 vintage, which was one of the best English vintages in the last 10 years. Made from 55% Chardonnay, 26% Pinot Noir, 19% Pinot Meunier, it shows baked apple fruit with a brisk herbaceous freshness while a classy minerality lingers on the long finish. Even better, resist temptation now and try it again in 6-8 years' time when it has even extra development of flavour. Rating: 91 www.thewinegang.com
Best score of the non-French Sparkling wines in Jancis Robinson's 'Fizz - autumn collection 2013.' 55% Chardonnay, 26% Pinot Noir, 19% Pinot Meunier, dosage 9 g/l. Maturing, creamy nose with a lovely Chardonnay character. Great personality – full and rich, yet with pinpoint structure. A return to form after the 2008. Drink 2013-2018 Rating: 17+ Richard Hemming - www.JancisRobinson.com
Few vineyards in England are better placed to exploit the similarity between the soils of the South Downs and those of the Champagne region in France than Nyetimber in West Sussex. But it took a couple from Chicago - Stuart and Sandy Moss - to bring the dream to life when they bought Nyetimber Manor in 1986. Vineyards followed from 1988 onwards, and the first vintage released was the 1992.
Nyetimber is now owned by Eric Heerema who already owned a vineyard in West Sussex when he bought Nyetimber in 2006 and had already identified more land for planting. All were amalgamated into Nyetimber which, now, comprises some 350 acres, all planted to Chardonnay and the Pinots Noir and Meunier, making it the biggest vineyard in England.
