Like its 2011 counterpart, the Deiss 2010 Altenberg de Bergheim is strikingly floral, but tends toward bitter-sweet and elusive perfume of iris and lily-of-the-valley. The influence of quinine and black tea as well as a welcome suggestion of fresh peach and citrus juiciness serve as more effective counterpoint and push-back to the wine’s prominent sweetness than is the case with the 2011. A gorgeous sense of openness and levity prevails here, with quince and nut pastes subtly complimenting the prominent impression of liquid floral perfume on a silken and expansive palate, leading to a prodigious finish at once caressing as well as stimulating in its dynamic interaction of flower, fruit, and mouthwatering mineral salts. The family resemblance to a great moelleux-style Chenin Blanc has to be taken as somehow a feature inherent to this site as well as to the variegated varietal mix in Deiss’s plantings there. This superb libation should merit following through at least 2035. Drinking range: 2014 - 2035 Rating: 95 David Schildknecht, 2014)

Bright straw. Perfumed aromas of nectarine, apple blossom, minerals and honey. Wonderfully vibrant and penetrating, offering complex flavors of pear, lime, honey and lemon custard freshened by a stony underpinning and very brisk acidity. Finishes extremely long and pure, with honeyed minerality and a hint of lemon zest. Rating: 95 Ian d'Agata, 2012)

Domaine Marcel Deiss

Jean-Michel Deiss's wines are without doubt among the most exciting of the region. His experimental field blends in the wines he likes to call 'level of Premier Cru' are immensely impressive and worth experimenting with - they each have a definite and unique character, and are some of the most fascinating white wines in the world. Deiss may be a contrary character himself, not always in tune with other producers in the area, but the quality in the wines really does speak for what he has achieved. Biodynamic.
