'I love this nose', says Bernard, smelling the empty brandy ballon he uses to mix the tasting sample from a range of barrels. It is very lightly expressive, and after the structured density of the Champeaux positively sings. The whole is probably just as powerful, but seems lifted and joyful with spice and fruit. L&S (Jan 2013)

The 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St. Jacques stands out in this range for its supple, resonant personality. One of the most refined and sensual of the 2011s, the Lavaux impresses for its expressive red fruit, silky tannins and phenomenal overall balance. It is a touch less overt than many of the other 2011s in the cellar, but exceptionally polished. Sweet floral and spiced notes flesh out on the radiant finish. In 2011, the Lavaux St. Jacques is a true standout. The 2011 was done with 75% whole clusters and aged in 100% new French oak. Drinking range: 2021 - 2031 Rating: 93-95 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Mar 2014)

(vinified with 67% stems). The densely fruited nose immediately communicates just how concentrated an effort this is as the plum, stone, spice and earthy aromas jump from the glass to reveal powerful and impressively scaled flavors that possess remarkable richness. This is robust and tautly muscular Lavaut with seemingly endless reserves of the characteristic minerality on the energetic and lightly menthol infused finish. Note that this will require plenty of cellar time to shed its very firm tannic shell but it should be well worth the wait. 2026+ Rating: 92-95 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2013)

75% whole bunch, 100% new oak. Lively and aromatic and expressive. Then quite a bit of tannin on the end. Maybe a bit too much? Maybe a bit over extracted? Fruit is somewhat smothered. Drying finish. 2020-2030 Rating: 16.5+ Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2013)
