LE CRUSTE

2011 Rosso Alberto Longo

Grapes Nero di Troia
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Puglia
ABV 13.5%

Le Cruste is Alberto's only wine that sees any oak and even this is relatively delicately done. The wine spends nealry 12 months in tonneau - only 20% of which are new. This really helps soften up and round out the 100% Nero di Troia - which is grown entirely on limestone. This is full of southern spice with big and ripe fruit checked perfectly by lovely delicate fine tannins a perfect foil for the glossy ripe fruit. Serious kit! L&S (Jul 2014)

Slightly reminiscent of Barbera from Northern Italy, the 2011 Uva di Troia Le Cruste shows bright acidity and attractive fruit forwardness. The wine offers interesting tones of cherry syrup, cola, blueberry and pressed rose petal. The quality of fruit is pristine with delineated lines and crisp buoyancy. Le Cruste ages in barrique and tonneaux for nine months. It exhibits extra softness and spicy richness on the long finish. Drinking range: 2015 - 2019 Rating: 90 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (May 2015)

Alberto Longo

Founded by Alberto Longo, a consultant for KPMG, this thirty five hectare estate is in Lucera, Apulia, and only released their first wines onto the market in 2005. Concentrating mainly on the indigenous varietals, Nero di Troia, Negromarao and Montepulciano, the wines have rapidly gained recognition as being the best of the region. The wines are made by oenologist Graziana Grassini, a pupil of Giaccomo Tachis, and well known to us for her tremendous efforts at Fattoria di Magliano in Tuscany. Her signature of expressive fruit, allowing the 'terroir' to show through, is evident in all of these wines, and while they have the ripeness of wines from the south, they are all marked by crisp and fresh acidity.

You can visit Cantine Alberto Longo's website here for more detailed information on his vineyards, wines and wine-making process.
