2011 Castello del Terriccio
|Grapes||Merlot, Cab Sauv|
Castello del Terriccio's 2011 Lupicaia, the estate's Cabernet Sauvignon/Petit Verdot blend, is dark, sensual and inviting. Scents of tobacco, grilled herbs, licorice, espresso and French oak meld around a core of super-ripe dark stone fruit. Unctuous and concentrated in the glass, the 2011 needs time to shed some baby fat and find its center. Drinking range: 2018 - 2028 Rating: 93+ Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Nov 2016)
*Case price: Mix any 12 bottles of wine or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits or Fortified to get the 'case price' for each bottle.
Aromas of ripe fruit, meat, walnuts and dark berries. Blackcurrants, too. Full body with round, velvety tannins. A little chewy. Balsamic and fresh-mushroom undertones. Big wine. Bordeaux blend of mostly cabernet sauvignon. Better in 2018. Rating: 92 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com(Nov 2015)
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (90%) and Petit Verdot, the 2011 Lupicaia represents a tremendous effort. The nose is brooding and masculine with dark tar, spice, cola, pressed blackberry, plum and prune. The aromas are heavy, long-lasting and determined. You do get a distant whiff of the 2011 vintage heat with dried or candied fruit at the back. Firm tannins and plump consistency push the wine forward over the palate. Castello del Terriccio is launching its flagship wine, Lupicaia, as its own brand. The producer name on the bottle now appears as G.A Rossi di Medelana and no longer as Castello del Terriccio. I offer that information as a brief housekeeping note. Drinking range: 2015 - 2028 Rating: 93 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com)(Sep 2015)
Castello del Terriccio
The Castello del Terriccio estate is one of the most beautifully situated along the entire coastal region, some miles north of Bolgheri. The 60 hectares of vines enjoy wonderful exposure, overlooking the sea, benefitting from its warmth and brightness. The vineyards are surrounded by 'maquis' and eucalyptus trees, which as well as protecting them, also contribute to the aromas and scents that so characterise the Terriccio wines.
Planted predominately with Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah, the wines are made by consultant oenologist Carlo Ferrini, who has to date brought thirteen 'Tre Bicchiere' awards to the estate.
These are wines that can be approached almost immediately and yet age so well over a decade and more.
Owned by the extraordinarily charming Cav. Gian Annibale Rossi di Medelana Serafini Ferri, once a talented horseman and still a passionate breeder.
