50/50 Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. 18–24 months in new tonneaux. Deep garnet. More open and multi-dimensional than the 2016 – all that dark fruit but also the complexity of bottle-age aromas: floral, spicy cigar box, lavender. Firm, thick but smooth tannins. Deep, long and moreish and clearly still more to come. Leathery aftertaste. Delicious. Drinking range: 2021 - 2034 Rating: 18 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Jul 2024)

There is evident heat to the fruit in the 2011 Lupicaia, but the balsam intensity or tertiary aromas also come through. The wine shows green notes of grilled herb and a sharper, more defined level of fruit intensity. The wine is profound and deep. The tannins are very well integrated, and the wine shows a vertical softness that makes this vintage stand out from the rest. I could see it pairing nicely with the classic Tuscan veal stew, spezzatino di vitello. Drinking range: 2019 - 2030 Rating: 94 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (May 2019)

Deep smudgy crimson. Smells sweeter fruited than the 2013 – 2011 was a warmer vintage. More damson and cassis here. But there's a lovely scent of cigar box and pepper here too. The tannins have the thickness of new oak ageing but are starting to resolve to a more chocolate character. Still a way to go. Drinking range: 2019 - 2028 Rating: 17+ Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2019)

Castello del Terriccio

The Castello del Terriccio is beautifully positioned around twenty-five kilometres north of Bolgheri, with commanding views towards Corsica. The 60 hectares of vines enjoy wonderful exposure, overlooking the sea, benefitting from its brightness and cooling breezes. The vineyards are surrounded by 'maquis' and eucalyptus trees, which as well as protecting them, also contribute to the aromas and scents that so characterise the Terriccio wines.

Planted predominately with Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah, the wines are made by consultant oenologist Carlo Ferrini, who has to date brought thirteen 'Tre Bicchiere' awards to the estate.

These are wines that can be approached almost immediately and yet age so well over a decade and more.

The estate continues in the hands of Vittorio Piozzo di Rosignano Rossi di Medelana who took over after the extraordinarily charming Cav. Gian Annibale Rossi di Medelana Serafini Ferri (or 'Pucci' as he was fondly known) who died at the end of 2019. Vittorio has the same team around him working in the cellars and the vineyards and the estate is going from strength to strength.
