By Combottes. After the aux Chezeaux, this shows a touch tight - a little reduction perhaps, Structural austerity, and in need of a little time. Virgile says this is one of his favourites - 'heady roses'. L&S (Jan 2013)

Soft and textured on the palate, the 2011 Morey St. Denis Aux Charmes is totally delicious. An open, perfumed bouquet melds into racy red fruit, all supported by silky, suave tannins. The fleshy, seductive finish is a thing of beauty. Drinking range: 2016 - 2026 Rating: 91-93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Mar 2014)

Light cherry colour. Rather generous even if not concentrated fruity nose. Some lusciousness. Though still in light, flirtatious mode. Attractive, and a bit more complex than the village wine. 2018-2027 Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2013)

Good bright, full red. Subtly complex aromas and flavors of raspberry, strawberry, mocha, licorice, pepper and underbrush. Suaver in texture than the foregoing samples, with nicely integrated acidity energizing the middle palate. The dry, scented finish unfolds with slowly building persistence and a note of licorice. Lignier always picks this parcel at the beginning with the objective of retaining purity and freshness. Rating: 89-91 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jan 2013)

Domaine Lignier-Michelot

A domaine of 11 hectares, 25% regionals, 50% Villages, 20% Premiers crus and 5% Grands Crus. Virgile Lignier worked at the domaine with his father Maurice from 1988, beginning to bottle some of the wine from 1992 (it had previously been sold to the négoce), taking over in 2000, which was the vintage when he first bottled all the domaine's production.

In the vineyard Virgile made significant changes, stopping the use of herbicides, and beginning to plough instead. Green harvesting to limits yields followed, along with greater attention to grape selection. The domaine works organically except in extremis.

The wines have a lovely combination of enough body and richness, combined with a lively clarity of expression. The old vines village cuvées are seriously good, and great value too. Going up the scale each site seems to speak very clearly of its source and there is a brightness and energy along with full, seamless fruit.
