2012 Chardonnay Talbott Vineyards

Another belter from Robb Talbott here in 2012. this is all barrel-fermented and aged for nearly a year on the lees in 45% new French oak, it’s certainly rich, weighty and full-flavoured but there is balance and great fruit cut too. You know it's Californian but it stays just the right side of powerful - there is detail and intensity too a wine you will really enjoy drinking, there is much to consider here in every glass. L&S (Sept 2016)

Personally planted by Robb in 1982, this 14-acre vineyard is perched on a mountaintop, 8 miles from Carmel Bay. The vines exist in virtually soil-free conditions clinging to fractured calcareous shale. Fortunately, the southern exposure helps moderate the extremely windy and foggy marine climate. This unique microclimate produces low yields and extended hangtime in the vineyard, resulting in unique and intensely flavored wines. Diamond T Chardonnay is made from the vineyard’s original 30-year-old Chardonnay plantings. 100% barrel fermented. All French oak (45% new). Aged 11 months sur lie. It displays ripe tropical aromas, as well as layers of citrus and minerals. These elements are repeated on the palate, along with sweet vanilla bean flavors. Excellent acidity brings freshness and focus to the wine, and will contribute to its ageability. The finish is long and lingering, with elements from the French oak aging providing additional depth and complexity. This is a cool-climate Chardonnay with power, rich tropical flavors and minerality. 14.5%Winemaker's notes (May 2014)

Talbott Vineyards

After being inspired by a boyhood trip to Burgundy, Robb Talbott built his wine estate almost single-handedly planting vines in the rocky barren Diamond T vineyard in 1982. In 1994 he acquired Sleepy Hollow in the Santa Lucia Highlands, a phylloxera-free vineyard planted in 1972. Together with winemaker Dan Karlsen, Robb is making some of Monterey's (even California's) finest Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays.
