CHÂTEAU POUJEAUX

2013 Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel Moulis-en-Médoc

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Moulis-en-Médoc
Classification Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel

Since being purchased by the Cuvelier family (of Clos Fourtet), Poujeaux has been doing some great things. However, the 2013 will not win many hearts and minds. Soft, light and fruity, but generally uninspiring, this blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot is a pleasant, picnic-styled red to drink over the next 4-5 years. 2014-2019 Rating: 85-87 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Aug 2014)

Deep red-ruby. Aromas of black cherry, dark plum, smoke and minerals. Sweet, fairly suave and surprisingly rich for the vintage, with a fine-grained texture and an enticing chocolatey ripeness. Finishes with very good persistence and floral lift. A second bottle tasted in another venue was much thinner and fruit-challenged, so I'm not entirely sure what to make of this wine; unfortunately, I didn't get to sample a third bottle. Given Poujeaux's track record for solid wines, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. Rating: 86-89 Ian d'Agata - Stephen Tanzer website (May 2014)

The nose is light quite fresh with the red and black fruits backed by a hint of oak. The start of the palate is sweeter a mid richness with the fresher fruit showing at the back. 2017-27 Rating: 87-91 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (May 2014)

Château Poujeaux

Château Poujeaux sits on the Grand Poujeaux, a Gunzian gravel mound of similar constitution to the more illustrious communes of the Haut-Médoc. Alongside Château Chasse-Spleen, Poujeaux is one of the leading estates in Moulis and offers great value to the discerning Haut-Médoc consumer. Moulis sits a little way back from the Gironde, between Saint Julien and Margaux. 16th century records show that the estate was owned by Gaston de L'Isle, then owner of Chateau Latour, although this is some time before wine production began at Poujeaux during the 19th Century. Since 2008 Château Poujeaux has been owned by Philippe Cuvelier, also owner of Saint Emilion estate Clos Fourtet. There are around 100 hectares of vineyard planted with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot.
