Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, the 2014 Puligny Montrachet 1Er Cru Champ Canet from Boillot has a very fine stony, gunflint and pressed flower-scented bouquet. There is a soupçon of broodiness here although it does open nicely on the palate with pretty dried apricot and Clementine notes. This is a very subtle Puligny, not overt and really open at the moment, but you have to stand back and admire the precision and detail on the finish. Drinking range: 2018 - 2033 Rating: 94 Neal Martin, www.robertparker.com(Nov 2017)

The 2014 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet has a vibrant, citrus-driven bouquet with tangible wet limestone and flinty notes emerging with time. The palate is just superb: beautifully balanced with very well judged acidity, fanning out gradually in the mouth with a gorgeous, saline finish that leaves you wanting another sip. This is an outstanding Champ Canet from Jean-March Boillot--chapeau! Drinking range: 2017 - 2030 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.robertparker.com(Jan 2016)

Very pale yellow. Aromas of apple and toasty lees. In a polite style but with good density and attractive lemony cut. The slowly mounting finish throws off notes of lemon, grapefruit and blood orange. Rating: 89-92 Stephen Tanzer, www.vinousmedia.com(Sep 2015)

Domaine Jean-Marc Boillot

Jean-Marc Boillot left the family domaine to be winemaker to Olivier Leflaive for five years. Then from his maternal grandfather Étienne Sauzet he inherited much of the vineyard of the old Domaine Sauzet, in some of the best vineyards of Puligny, and with this holding and others from his paternal side, he set up his own business. He makes wines that show well young, with complex exotic fruit aromas with the core of minerality, but they age well too. His daughter Lydie and son are now taking a more active role in the domaine, and they have branched out with a thriving négociant business and a property near the Pic Saint Loup in the Languedoc - Domaine des Roques.
