The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino explodes from the glass with a dramatic display of sweet cherries, exotic spice and cedar shavings, evolving and gaining further depths as its fruit morphs more toward ripe strawberry, complicated by wild herbs and hints of undergrowth. On the palate, the 2015 is soft yet so tense and poised, showing incredible purity through the brilliant flavors of mineral-tinged red berries and savory spices. The finish is long, feminine and youthfully structured, still resonating on ripeness and giving pleasure today, yet balanced to evolve for a decade or more in the cellar. Drinking range: 2020 - 2028 Rating: 93 Eric Guido, www.vinous.com (Jun 2020)
Carlo Ferrini is one of the most talented winemaker in Italy and Giodo is his own boutique winery of 2,5ha in Montalcino. His reputation for elegant wines is not misplaced as he should be considered a kind of master of tannins, his hobby horse. The vines are 18 years old now. The yields at about 50q/ha are the perfect balance for Montalcino, combining concentration and the Mediterranean climate of the region. The wine is deep ruby, with great definition and purity of raspberry fruit; layered with potpourri and smoky woodland notes. Vibrant acidity with sifted silky tannins of great weight at the centre palate will keep it fresh for long ageing and development of greater complexity. Drinking range: 2020 - 2040 Rating: 96 Aldo Fiordelli, Decanter.com (May 2020)
In order to preserve acidity, owner Carlo Ferrini started picking in the first week of September and was finished by mid-month. He also credits the southeastern exposure, which sees the gentle morning sun and cooler nights than more westerly expositions. This opens up slowly, revealing sun-drenched cherry, Mediterranean flowers and herbs against cooler earthy forest notes. The palate is laden with ripe fruit and soft mouth-caressing tannins, while an underlying tanginess keeps it buoyant. Elegantly styled with a touch of oak in the background. Drinking range: 2022 - 2032 Rating: 93 Decanter Magazine (Apr 2020)
Podere Giodo di Carlo Ferrini
'Eleganza, eleganza, eleganza' is the mantra of the famed oenologist Carlo Ferrini. Since the first vintage in 2009, this estate has fast become something of a cult classic, immediately amongst the established top Montalcino producers.
Carlo's stellar career started with fifteen years researching Sangiovese clones for the Chianti Classico Consorzio and subsequently he has consulted at some of the greatest estates in Italy. In 2009 he finally put down some roots of his own, putting his full effort and expertise, his heart and soul - into his own winery in Montalcino. Named after his parents 'Giovanna and Donatello' - Giodo is small, just 5.5 Hectares - but perfectly formed.
Carlo spent many years looking for the best spot for his own venture. Just south of the town of Montalcino he found the site for Giodo. South-east facing, gentle slopes in small parcels surrounded by forest, perfectly exposed to the morning and early afternoon sun, and looking out towards Monte Amiata. He planted fifteen different clones of Sangiovese, all chosen for their quality of fruit and their low yields, using his earlier experience to select the very best for this site.
The winery itself, it should come as no surprise, is a minimalist work of art and the culmination of Carlo's experience in designing the perfect tool for the job for his clients over the years. It was finished just in time to make the 2019 vintage. The gravity-fed vat room has both stainless steel and concrete vats, and the barrel cellar has a variety of amphorae as well as multiple sizes of barrels.
