CHABLIS

2016 1er Cru Montmains Domaine Laurent Tribut

Grapes Chardonnay
Colour White
Origin France, Burgundy
District Chablis
Classification 1er Cru
ABV 13%
Vineyard Montmains

Clean bright saline - more steely. More zing and drive. Nicely poised - fruit core is tight and firm but you can sense the ripeness, this is juicy too. And will unfurl in time. This flows effortlessly. Clean bright and quite easy feel for now. Limpid and pure, with less scrape and push. L&S (Oct 2017)

The 2016 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru is more backward than the Côte de Léchet on the nose, but there is still a captivating stoniness here, what you might call a “mean” bouquet but in a positive sense. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, just a little more weight than the Côte de Léchet with a touch of sage and white pepper on the finish. Drinking range: 2019 - 2032 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Aug 2018)

(from Tribut’s smallest parcel of only .23 ha situated in La Forêt). Here there are no funky sulfur notes present on the pear, mineral reduction, iodine and soft sea breeze nuances. There is both good volume and vibrancy to the much more refined middle weight flavors that also possess a seductive mouth feel while delivering fine depth and length on the balanced finale. This is usually the best wine in Tribut’s range and so it is again in 2016. Drinking range: 2021 - Rating: 90-92 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2018)

The 2016 Chablis 1Er Cru Montmains had just been racked from barrel so it was quite difficult to read on the nose. The palate is much more expressive with a fine bead of acidity and a touch more mineral tension than the Beauroy at this early stage, with a tang of orange zest and quince right on the finish. This may well turn out to be the pick of Laurent's 2016s. Drinking range: 2019 - 2029 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2017)

Domaine Laurent Tribut

Laurent Tribut is married to Vincent Dauvissat's sister, Marie Clotilde. When he started he made his wines in the Dauvissat cellar in Chablis, but now this small family-run domaine is based in Poinchy. Laurent has now officially retired and has now handed over to three of their four children (Solange, Adeline and Gabriel), with Solange taking the lead in the winery. With Laurent’s guidance the future here looks very bright.

With just 6 hectares the quantities are small - but the quality of all the cuvées is extraordinary. Pure, powerfully driven, classically shaped there is more than a passing similarity to the wines of his brother-in-law, the head-line grabbing Vincent Dauvissat. Buyers will enjoy these long-lived wines with some time in bottle too - they have a great ability to age and patience will pay off, we recently tasted the 1er Cru Côte de Léchet 2004 with Laurent in his cellar and it was bright, young and full of vigour - nearly 15 years on, and in 2020 the 2000 Beauroy was still in it’s prime. This is brilliant, classic Chablis.
