This is magnificent. Seamless and supple purity of fruit and mineral savour. Just so elegant and graceful and teasing, mouthwatering, with a density of freshness, a great sunny maturity and vivid aromatics giving a real sense of grace and elegance. Drinking range: 2030 - 2045 Rating: 93-94 L&S (Apr 2017)

The 2016 Tertre-Rôteboeuf has a ravishing, luscious, ripe, meaty bouquet that threatens to overwhelm the senses. This must surely be Tertre-Rôteboeuf! The palate is soft and caressing on the entry, and very pliable, with hints of oxtail and hickory toward the finish. Those who love François Mitjavile’s wine will love this. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Drinking range: 2025 - 2050 Rating: 94+ Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Aug 2020)

Even better, the magical 2016 Le Tertre Rôteboeuf is another heavenly wine from François Mitjavile that flirts with perfection. A normal blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc brought up in new oak, its deep purple color is followed by a huge nose of sweet cassis, caramelized blackcurrants, toasted bread, espresso, and smoked herbs. Full-bodied, deep, and powerful, it just dances on the palate with no sensation of weight or heaviness, has remarkable purity of fruit, and is perfectly balanced. It should be drinkable in 4-5 years and will cruise in cold cellars for 2-3 decades. Bravo! Drinking range: 2023 - 2053 Rating: 99 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Feb 2019)

Some critics have listed this among their favourite wines of the vintage, but it’s a little ripe and over the top for my taste. Dense, sweet and figgy, with vanilla-scented oak, slightly pruney tannins and just enough acidity for balance. Drinking range: 2020 - 2024 Rating: 92 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com (May 2017)

Château Le Tertre Rôteboeuf

The cellar at Tertre Rôteboeuf is something to behold. Dark, unpretentious with vine roots growing along the walls - it's the complete opposite of the grandeur experienced at other Right Bank Châteaux. Very refreshing indeed. It is a slice of the best sort of Burgundian charm nestled amongst the local grandees. Francois Mitjavile has the air of a chaotic creative - but this cellar is beautifully ordered and he fashions wines of stunning beauty here, aromatic and wonderfully complex. Year after year. This 6HA property remains a hard to get hold of Cult classic and a visit here is a real highlight of our annual trip to the region. In 1987 he purchased a second property in the Côtes de Bourg, Roc des Cambes. The wines here share much of the family feel and are well worth hunting out too.
