The Pomerol region excelled in 2016, and the Château Mazeyres is an elegant, pure, silky wine that plays in the medium-bodied, classic style of the vintage nicely. Tasting like a Grand Cru Red Burgundy with its beautiful red fruits, forest floor, and spice, it hits the palate with ultra-fine tannins, outstanding balance, and a great finish. I’d love a little more flesh, but those who prioritize elegance and purity over power and richness will like this even more than me. It benefits from air and should drink nicely for over a decade. Drinking range: 2019 - 2029 Rating: 90 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Feb 2019)

Alain Moueix has crafted a 2016 Mazeyres with an open-knit, expressive, slightly earthy bouquet that might feel a little rustic compared to other 2016 Pomerols. It has a natural sensibility. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dry tannin on the entry. I was expecting a little more depth and backbone here, perhaps just tapering in towards the finish when I wanted it to fan out. Fine, but I was expecting a little more horsepower and we will have to see if it matches the excellent 2015. Drinking range: 2019 - 2030 Rating: 88-90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2017)

Alain Moueix consulting. Biodynamic. Some Petit Verdot. Glowing purple – not that dense. Toasty and interesting on the nose. Very sweet start and polished tannins. Certainly not heavy but good energy. Drinking range: 2023 - 2035 Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2017)

Château Mazeyres

The 18th Century Château Mazeyres stands in the northern outskirts of Libourne and is part of the smallest appellation in the Gironde, Pomerol, widely known for the aromatic intensity of its wines and the typicality of its terroirs inscribed in an exceptional geological ensemble.

The vineyard is located on a beautiful ridge of sandy gravel with a subsoil of serious clay extending onto the plateau of Catusseau, a molasse subsoil that is extremely rich in iron.

Alain Moueix has managed Château Mazeyres since 1992, in which time the château has been renovated, expanded the vineyard from 8 to 25.5ha, and moved the viticulture over toward the biodynamic. The vineyards are 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.
