We only saw one sample of Meyney, and it was very dense, but seemed to have little lift. This sample had slightly medicinal fruit and was very oaky. Judgement suspended. L&S (Apr 2017)

Right next door to Montrose, this is another 2016 to look out for, and one that shows the brilliance of St Estèphe. Dark fruits abound, and the wine is full of natural power and exuberance, with fresh acidities. Still young, clearly a good 15 years ahead of it, but can be drunk now. Harvest September 23 to October 14, with an expanded team of 90 pickers in 2016 that allowed for more precision. Hubert de Boüard consultant. Drinking range: 2022 - 2040 Rating: 94 Jane Anson, Decanter (Oct 2022)

The 2016 Meyney has a very deep color. The bouquet is similar to the bottle poured blind at the Southwold tasting, laden with those mineral-rich black fruits. The palate is focused and poised, framed by very fine tannins and delivering a complex and involving finish that is absolutely top-notch. This gives the big names of the appellation a run for their money. What a fantastic Meyney! A young Saint-Estèphe with a spring in its step. Tasted at a vertical at Château Meyney. Drinking range: 2023 - 2045 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jul 2020)

Tasted blind. Very dark crimson. Intense Indian ink on the nose. Give me my calligraphy pen! Rich and round. Very glamorous. So much effort has gone into every drop of this …. VGV Drinking range: 2026 - 2050 Rating: 18.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2020)

Château Meyney

Chateau Meyney in St. Estephe has a long history starting in the 1662, when it is mentioned in records as a convent, making it one of the oldest estates in the Médoc. It occupies a gravelly bank facing the Gironde and is a neighbour of Montrose.

The 51 hectare vineyard with vines averaging between 35 and 40 years old is planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. The gravel based terroir has a large streak of blue clay close to three metres thick.

In 2004, Meyney was bought by CA Grands Châteaux, also owners of Château de Rayne Vigneau and Château Grand-Puy Ducasse. They have employed Hubert de Boüard as consulting oenologist.
