CHÂTEAU MONBRISON

2016 Cru Bourgeois Supérieur Margaux

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Margaux
Classification Cru Bourgeois Supérieur
ABV 14%

Quite understated when first approached but revisited several times it showed very well in this vintage. Very delicate and pure aromas, there is some real style and florality in this wine, despite being quite a solid build. Layers of textured ripe fruit, fine tannins, good acidity. The distinctive 2016 freshness at the end. It needs time but matures relatively quickly. Great value for a Margaux at this level. Drinking range: 2023 - 2035 Rating: 90-92 L&S (Apr 2017)

The 2016 Monbrison has a soft, slightly smudged bouquet of straightforward red fruit laced with leather and hints of dark chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannins, muffled black fruit laced with white pepper and a gentle, open-knit, rather Pauillac-like finish. Fine, but not as long-term as its peers. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting. Drinking range: 2021 - 2038 Rating: 89 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Aug 2020)

I loved the 2016 Château Monbrison, an incredibly charming, classic Margaux. Beautiful notes of black raspberries, spicy wood, dried flowers, and incense all define this medium-bodied, floral, elegant, balanced effort. I suspect it will continue offering pleasure for 15-20 years. Drinking range: 2019 - 2039 Rating: 90 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Feb 2019)

The 2016 Monbrison is a Margaux that has performed splendidly this vintage, one that did not shine as benevolently as other appellations. It has a vigorous, delineated bouquet with blueberry, raspberry and crushed violets, the new oak neatly integrated. The palate is nicely structured and though there is a touch of hardness to the tannin on the entry, that will soften by the time of bottling. The acidity is well judged and there is good grip on the finish. Monbrison is often well-priced en primeur and as such, this comes recommended. Drinking range: 2021 - 2040 Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2017)

Château Monbrison

Château Monbrison is in the commune of Arsac, a near neighbour of Château du Tertre. Robert Davis, an American, bought the estate in 1921 when he married into a local family.

Owning a Bordeaux estate was not always an easy thing at a time of World Wars and Depression, and Monbrison’s vineyards were pulled up in 1939. Fortunately, Robert’s daughter Elizabeth had the foresight to replant the vineyards in 1963, initially selling the produce to Château Prieuré-Lichine but from the mid-1970’s producing wines of Château Monbrison in their own right. Today the estate is owned and run by Robert Davis’s grandson Laurent Vonderheyden.

Vineyards are planted with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot.
