'Le Grand Maupertui' is at the top of Clos, just below Grands Echezeaux where there was considerable frost damage this year. Less ripe than some on the nose, more dark fruited. It immediately picks up in the mouth - this has great pure, pretty fruit - but a line and length that is impeccable. Great drive and push are buoyed by the lovely pretty scented fruit. Goes on and on. Fresh and pure. This parcel was originally planted in 1905, the vines now average about 60 years old. L&S (Oct 2017)

0.93-ha plot of 80-year-old vines in the Grand Maupertuis sector, in the upper part of the Clos and towards the south. Seven casks instead of the 15 in 2015. And some years they get 18 or 19! Tank sample. Deep garnet. Savoury nose and very rich and concentrated. Relatively tough tannins. Briary and set for the long term. Very small grapes, as in Les Barreaux in Vosne, and one can taste the slightly dry tannins. Drinking range: 2025 - 2040 Rating: 17 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Feb 2018)

(60% new oak; from a .93 ha parcel). A brooding and grumpy reluctant nose reveals its aromas of humus and earth-suffused dark berry fruit. The mouthfeel of the medium weight flavors is relatively refined though they’re not particularly concentrated, at least not compared to the Ech or Riche. They do however possess good power and focus plus this is sufficiently structured to make clear that this is going to require time. Drinking range: 2028 - Rating: 91-93 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2018)

A great Clos Vougeot considering that it was located in the enclave affected by frost. The 2016 Clos Vougeot le Grand Maupertui comes from vines located adjacent to Grands Echézeaux. It has a very detailed bouquet: more black fruit here than red, cold slate-like scents, very well focused and yet tightly wound. The palate is medium-bodied with quite robust tannin at the moment. This is a more masculine, almost saturnine Clos Vougeot that insistently grips the mouth, the mineral element only appearing toward the finish. It will require five or six years in bottle but it will be worth the wait. Drinking range: 2022 - 2045 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2017)

Domaine Anne Gros

Anne Gros joined her father François at the family domaine in Vosne Romanée in 1988, having given up her arts studies in favour of viticulture and oenology at Beaune and Dijon, and has run the domaine alone since 1995. The Domaine now has 6.5 hectares of Pinot and Chardonnay. Anne describes herself as being 'wary of certainties and keen to preserve her freedom'.

In the vineyards Anne practises viticulture influenced by organic and biodynamic principles, and the vineyards are ploughed and fertilised with compost, but although she believes that the long-term health of the vineyards are best preserved by such methods, she likes to maintain the freedom to use conventional treatments when necessary.

In the cellar, the wines are classically made, in cement tanks for the reds, and stainless steel for the whites. They are then are aged in barrel for up to fifteen months, with 80% new wood for the grand crus, 50% for the village wines and 30% for the regional wines. Anne is quietly meticulous and almost obsessive about cleanliness in her cellar, which perhaps is reflected in the delicacy and restrained tension in her wines, which have aromatic clarity, limpid precision, sheer joie de vivre, lively balance and persistence.
