FELTON ROAD

2016 Block 6 Chardonnay [Library Release 2022]

Grapes Chardonnay
Colour White
Origin New Zealand, South Island
ABV 13.5%

The 2016 Block 6 Chardonnay has a touch more lime on the nose compared to the Block 2, featuring smoke-tinged citrus fruit laced with orange blossom and beeswax. The fresh, vibrant palate is very well balanced with a crisp line of acidity, very good tension and a sense of energy towards the finish. This just has the edge over the Block 2... for now. Drinking range: 2018 - 2028 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Nov 2018)

From a north-facing slope, the 2016 Block 6 Chardonnay delivers classic Chardonnay aromas of white peaches and gently toasted hazelnuts. It's medium-bodied, with a plump, succulent mouthfeel and a crisp backbone of citrusy acids. Complex shades of baking spices accent the nearly endless lemony finish. A modern-day classic. Drinking range: 2018 - 2025 Rating: 94 Joe Czerwinski, www.robertparker.com (Feb 2018)

An elevated spot in the Felton Road vineyard. A cool lime and grapefruit nose with hints of guava. Very fruit-focused style. The palate delivers plenty of succulent ripe lime and pineapple fruit flavor as well as a little honey. A nicely cut finish. Drink now. Rating: 93 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Nov 2017)

Felton Road

Felton Road and Rippon are undoubtedly the two leading vineyards in Central Otago, both making Pinots that are finely textured with fresh fruit flavours, rather than the 'fruit bombs' that so many others produce. Felton Road has been totally organic and biodynamic across their three Bannockburn vineyards since 2005. They have been certified by Demeter since 2009. After that there are more differences than similarities.
While Rippon, at Wanaka is on schist, Felton Road in Banockburn is on clay and calcareous loess. It is also very much in the rain shadow of the Main Divide. Irrigation is used at Rippon to help establish young vines, but dry farming is possible once the vines get their roots down, while at Felton Road permanent irrigation is required for the entire vineyard.
