LADERAS DE LEONILA WHITE

2016 Màquina y Tabla

Grapes Palomino, Godello, Doña Blanca
Colour White
Origin Spain, Bierzo
ABV 12.5%

Jancis Robinson's Wine of the Week 22/09/2017. "The standout wine was Laderas de Leonila Blanco 2016, a blend of 50% Doña Blanca (Portugal's Síria), 35% Palomino and 15% Godello, barrel fermented and then aged for 14 months in old French barriques under flor. The grapes were grown in Bierzo but the style of the wine is so far outside the Mencía and Godello norms for this denomination that this wine does not have a DO. Palomino Fino, the sherry grape, was widely planted in this far northwestern corner of Spain in the early twentieth century when the vineyards were recovering from phylloxera, so one can easily see why Oriol Illa thought of making a cross between a dry white table wine and a sort of northern fino sherry." Drinking range: 2017 - 2020 Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Sept 2017)

You've got to try this with crab salad... A table wine which Oriol makes with a mix of grapes, but which includes 35% Palomino. Boring grape, he thought, but they make great wines in Jerez with it - so he thought he'd give that a go. By creating a humid atmosphere in the cellar (by spreading water around), he encouraged the growth of the same 'flor' as develops in fino sherry. This flor-developed component is then blended back with the rest to create a unique wine which is saltily tangy and appetising as well as having the ripe texture of a white Burgundy.L&S (May 2018)

Yet another fascinating, original wine from Oriol and Susana Illa of Màquina & Tabla. It's not just the blend that's unusual – 50% Doña Blanca (aka Síria and many other names), 35% Palomino (as in sherry) 15% Godello – it's that for four of its 14 months in old French barrels it was aged under flor, the yeast behind the salty, Marmitey tang of Fino sherry. Here it gives a delicious, stored-apples spiciness, straw and saltiness to the greengage and apricot fruit and the creamy roundness. Rating: 90 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Oct 2017)

Màquina y Tabla

It was an exciting day when we first discovered these brilliant wines, and we are delighted to be introducing them to the UK and share the joy - each wine has an incredible sense of identity and real pow! Yet all done with such charm and restrained style, they just make you smile. Pure, elegant, expressive and so, so drinkable - this is exciting stuff. They look absolutely beautiful too - could this be the perfect package from Spain!?

'Màquina & Tabla' is the brainchild of a dynamic duo - Oriol the winemaker and Susana, who is the creative genius behind the marketing and presentation. They are a tiny family business that began in 2013 in Castilla y León. Their focus is in the details, and they believe in a high quality wine that is always respectful of the land and nature. Their project started from scratch, travelling around the region looking for the oldest and most peculiar vineyards. All their grapes are cultivated bio-dynamically, grown currently in rented vineyards.

Oriol the winemaker describes himself as having been an "oenopath" who, slowly but surely, became more and more interested in winemaking, a passion that turned into a profession during the 2000 harvest in Clos Mogador. Since then as a winemaker he has lead, or taken part in, several projects, including with Vinya l'Hereu, Heretat Montrubí, Els Jelipins and Prieto Pariente. Now, with this project he says he is 'happier than a kid in a candy shop'. Susana comes from the world of arts and entertainment, having been a Creative Editor in publishing, audiovisual and new media for Prisa, Planeta and RBA, while conceptualizing new ideas, she has managed teams and projects, as well as coordinated communication and production for small projects related to art and music. Now she's bringing all of her experience and energy to Màquina & Tabla. The striking label designs by Joan Josep Bertran perhaps need a tiny bit of explanation, and you can read more about them on their website (link at the top of this page).
