LUPICAIA

2016 Castello del Terriccio

Grapes Cab Sauv, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
District Bolgheri
ABV 14.5%

50/50 Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. 18–24 months in new tonneaux. 2016 was cooler than 2011. Mid garnet. Rich, deep, dark-sweet fruit with the start of dried cherry and leather. Smooth and leathery on the palate, yet juicy and amenable in the roundness of the tannins. Still lots of fruit at the core. Deep and chewy on the finish. Much more about the place than the varieties. Drinking range: 2024 - 2036 Rating: 17.5 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Jul 2024)

The rich and generous Castello del Terriccio 2016 Lupicaia is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The wine is identified with the name of estate owner G.A. Rossi di Medelana on the front label. It opens to dark fruit intensity with blackberry, black cherry, tar, leather and cured tobacco. There is a lot of pretty concentration in this vintage, and it is well balanced by the linearity and precision of the mouthfeel. Drinking range: 2020 - 2040 Rating: 95 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Oct 2022)

Castello del Terriccio

The Castello del Terriccio is beautifully positioned around twenty-five kilometres north of Bolgheri, with commanding views towards Corsica. The 60 hectares of vines enjoy wonderful exposure, overlooking the sea, benefitting from its brightness and cooling breezes. The vineyards are surrounded by 'maquis' and eucalyptus trees, which as well as protecting them, also contribute to the aromas and scents that so characterise the Terriccio wines.

Planted predominately with Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah, the wines are made by consultant oenologist Carlo Ferrini, who has to date brought thirteen 'Tre Bicchiere' awards to the estate.

These are wines that can be approached almost immediately and yet age so well over a decade and more.

The estate continues in the hands of Vittorio Piozzo di Rosignano Rossi di Medelana who took over after the extraordinarily charming Cav. Gian Annibale Rossi di Medelana Serafini Ferri (or 'Pucci' as he was fondly known) who died at the end of 2019. Vittorio has the same team around him working in the cellars and the vineyards and the estate is going from strength to strength.
