ROSSO DI MONTALCINO

2016 Ginestreto Fuligni

Grapes Sangiovese Grosso
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
Sub-district Rosso di Montalcino
ABV 14%

So bright, so fine and such sophisticated balance. Deep cherry flesh and that perk from the skins, then some brighter redder juice too and a sloe-berry line. Incredible dried herb and some soft tobacco leaf hints add some seasoning then glorious cigar box spices build too . This has Fuligni written all over it - such refinement that it’s hard to resist that next glass. L&S (Apr 2019)

The 2016 Rosso di Montalcino Ginestreto shows all the natural translucence that makes Sangiovese so alluring. Sweet tobacco, mint, red cherry, orange peel and spice are finely delineated in a vibrant, mid-weight wine that pulses with energy. There is so much to like. This is pure and total class. Drinking range: 2019 - 2028 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Oct 2019)

The 2016 Rosso di Montalcino Ginestreto is a delightful wine with a bright ruby appearance followed by fresh fruit flavors. The wine offers wild berry, violets, lilacs and fragrant aromas of moist potting soil. A lasting sense of intensity and freshness drives this wine clean over the palate. It would pair nicely with any cheese-heavy dish such as pasta or lasagna. Drinking range: 2019 - 2024 Rating: 90+ Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Aug 2019)

This shows a distinctive and lifted candied tangerine edge, as well as blueberry peel and sour cherries. The palate’s very tight with edgy acidity, showing firm tannins and a bright finish. Not the richest of wines, but very endearing. Drink now. Rating: 91 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Sept 2018)

Fuligni

Founded in 1923 by Giovanni Fuligni, the estate today is co-owned by Robert Guerrini Fuligni and his delightful aunt Maria Flora Fuligni. Together with his aunt, Roberto makes the wines with oenologist Paolo Vagaggini and his son Jacopo, while agronomist Federico Ricci looks after the vineyards.

The estate covers 100 hectares, of which 25 are under vine, almost all planted with Sangiovese, with a small amount of Merlot for the IGT blend. 4 plots, Semiti, San Giovanni, Ginestreto and Cotimeli produce Sangiovese for the Brunelli and Rosso and each vineyard is kept separate during fermentation. What is important is the combined height of the vineyards (350-440m), the density of planting, age of the vines (12-30 plus) and the 'galestro' soils on which they are planted. Fuligni's wines have reached international recognition for their purity of expression, strong backbone of acidity and polished tannins.

These are simply the finest wines of Brunello, epitomising all that is great from the region. The 'Rosso' now comes from a defined part of the vineyard, on clay and tufa rather than the marl of the Brunello. It is made from the outset as a Rosso, with different clones and the intention to make a wine which will be approachable at a much younger age.
