This year they managed 10 barrels of Chambolle - a great improvement on last year when they filled just 1 after the devastating 2016 frost. The vines were very productive bouncing back from the quiet season last year, having been frosted. To ensure quality and intensity a heavy green harvest was needed. Nose has more meatiness more brawn it would seem. Still beautifully aromatic - but somehow less delicate than you might expect from Chambolle. In a good way though, this has tempo and build. The palate is gorgeous. Rich and polished with mega flow and intent. Lots of great red flesh. Ripe plum and just a splash of darker more intriguing grippy savour too. Discreet but not invisible wood is present on the wafting aromas of airy red berries that are laced with spice and floral nuance. The dusty and muscular flavors medium weight flavors exhibit excellent length on the youthfully austere and decidedly firm finish. The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes is supremely charming this year, soaring from the glass with beautiful aromas of raspberries, cherries and rose petals, complemented by subtle bass-notes of forest floor. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, elegant and satiny, with an expansive, melting profile and juicy balancing acids. It's quintessentially Chambolle. The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Feusselottes 1er Cru was green harvested this vintage as the vines had a lot of energy after being frosted the previous year. Matured in 50% new oak, it has a delineated and precise bouquet of blackberry, wild hedgerow and touches of tobacco. The palate is beautifully defined with filigreed tannin. Full of energy and tension, offering vibrant black cherries and raspberry preserve laced with crushed stone on the finish. Excellent. Smooth texture, full and ripe. summer fruits, super ripe (10 barrels versus the one barrels in 2016). Succulent and rather long. Good concentration in the mid palate. Doing a severe green harvest reduced yields to a still comfortable 42hl/ha in 2017, producing a wine with fine, nuanced red berry fruit flavours, some salinity and grip, subtle 45% new oak, appealing freshness and bounce. Drinking range: 2023 - 2029 Rating: 93-93 Tim Atkin MW - Decanter(Nov 2018)
Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg
Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg was founded in 1933 on the marriage of Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret. Holdings then consisted of Bourgogne, village Nuits, village Vosne and Echezeaux. Their son Georges, an opthalmologist by day, added to the vineyards, but his acquisitions (Nuits 1ers Crus Vignes Rondes and Chaignots, Chambolle 1er Cru Feusselottes, and Grands Crus Clos Vougeot and Ruchottes Chambertin) were kept separate as Domaine Georges Mugneret. On Georges' death in 1988, his widow Jacqueline and daughter Marie-Christine took over. Marie-Andrée, the younger daughter joined them a little later having completed her studies as an oenologist. In 2009 the two domaine names were put together to become Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, ending the prior confusion of labels. The sisters have proved more than safe hands as far as the winemaking is concerned, and these are top-flight burgundies with that elusive balance of enough concentration allied with delicacy of expression and the capability to age well. All the vineyard management has been brought in-house (the domaine previously relied on two métayeurs for part of the vineyard) and the quality has reached new heights, its wines some of the most sought-after in the Côte de Nuits.
