CHÂTEAU BELGRAVE

2017 5ème Cru Classé Haut Médoc

Grapes Cab Sauv, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Classification 5ème Cru Classé

88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot. Smooth on entry. The wine is quite fat but not expressive at this stage, it is closed with a creamy texture. There is some energetic acidity which keeps it lively. Rating: 88 L&S (Apr 2018)

The 2017 Belgrave offers crisp blackberry and tobacco scents on the nose, a touch of gravel developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannin, masculine and rather austere towards the finish where I would have liked more flesh. A second showing towards the end of my tasting did indicate a wine developing more fruité towards the finish and my score reflects anticipated amelioration during its barrel maturation. Drinking range: 2020 - 2027 Rating: 87-89 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2018)

50% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, planted on deep gravel with clay subsoil. Deep crimson with black core. Sweet black damson fruit. Lots of rocky graphite flavour giving a dark elegance on the palate, and the tannins are supple and add to the freshness. Just a little bit herbaceous on the finish, perhaps? Drinking range: 2023 - 2030 Rating: 16 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2018)

Offering lots of black (and some blue) fruits, charcoal, and graphite, the inky-colored 2017 Château Belgrave is firm and tannic on the palate, with nicely integrated acidity. I’d like a touch more flesh on these bones, but it’s certainly a serious effort that I suspect will benefit from short-term cellaring. Rating: 87-89 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Apr 2018)

Château Belgrave

Haut-Médoc Cinquième cru 1855 Despite being listed as a 5th Growth in the 1855 classification, Château Belgrave's reputation for great wine-making is very recent. It is only since it came under the Dourthe umbrella that serious advances have been made in the vineyards, production techniques and, consequently, the finished wine. The estate is in the commune of St Laurent-Médoc and, therefore, only entitled to the Haut-Médoc appellation. However, only a small stream seperates the vineyards from St Julien, and the gravel soils are very much the same. Whilst the name might appear to derive from these same gravelly soils, apparently it dates from the time of an English owner who named his vineyard after the London district of Belgravia! Since the Dourthe take-over the vineyards have been gradually replanted to a more Médoc-like 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, whilst the proportion of Merlot has shrunk to just over 40%, with the rest made up of a little Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
