CHÂTEAU FEYTIT CLINET

2017 Pomerol

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Pomerol & Lalande de Pomerol
Village Pomerol

The 2017 Feytit-Clinet has quite a complex bouquet with red berry fruit, a touch of seaweed and smoke. It is not as powerful as the previous two vintages although it displays impressive focus. The palate is very refined on the entry, silky smooth in texture (as usual) with a fine bead of acidity. It just needs to manifest more precision towards the finish but that will hopefully develop during its barrel maturation. I have been a big supporter of Jeremy Chasseuil’s often over-looked Pomerol and though, this is not from his top-drawer, it still shows potential. I am prudent with my assessment for now. The present blend of the 2017 Feytit Clinet is 94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc. Very deep purple-black in color, it gives up crushed black plums, blackberries and mulberries with hints of spice box, sandalwood and wood smoke. The palate is medium-bodied, firm, chewy and quite earthy in the mouth with just enough freshness and those spices reemerge on the finish. Rating: 90-92 Lisa Perrotti-Brown, RobertParker.com (Apr 2018)

The charming (and talented) Jeremy Chasseuil has turned out a brilliant 2017 Feytit-Clinet from his tiny estate located between Trotanoy and Latour a Pomerol. Based on 94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc aging in 65% new French oak, it offers a gorgeous nose of ripe black and blue fruits, violets, and damp earth, with impeccably integrated sweet oak. Full-bodied, rounded, and concentrated, it plays in the fresh, elegant style of the vintage, yet packs more oomph and texture than most. This is brought in exclusively by American merchant Jeffrey Davies and is well worth your time and money. Rating: 93-96 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Apr 2018)

Deep greyish crimson. Charry dark fruit on the nose. Plenty of black fruit though the oak is rather apparent at the moment. Tannins are compact but smooth, just a little sour and hard on the finish. Drinking range: 2023 - 2029 Rating: 15.5 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2018)

Château Feytit Clinet

Jérémy Chasseuil took this property in hand in 2000, and the wines have got better with every passing vintage, truly showing the potential of this tiny 6.5 hectare property, set right in the heart of Pomerol (close to Clinet, Trotanoy and Latour à Pomerol). It's on gravelly-sandy and clay soils and planted with 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, with vines that average over 30 years old. Despite the name, and the statement "mis en bouteille au chateau" on the label, there is no château, just a small well-equipped chai.
The grapes are hand-picked before fermentation in concrete and steel vats, where they spend four or five weeks before the wine is run off for the malolactic fermentation in barrel. The wine is aged for around 18 months is up to 80% new oak barrels.
