CHÂTEAU LA CROIX SAINT GEORGES

2017 Pomerol

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Pomerol & Lalande de Pomerol
Village Pomerol

The 2017 La Croix St. Georges has a very floral bouquet with violets accompanying the cassis and black cherry fruit. This is quite “full on” for the vintage but there is modest delineation and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with noticeable wood tannins straight from the start. The dominating clusters on the finish leave the mouth demanding more fruité and flesh. It’s just a wine where I want to see more restraint and prudence. Drinking range: 2022 - 2032 Rating: 88-90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2018)

95% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Inky crimson. Dark cassis aroma, firm and really chewy but with some dark and full-flavoured black fruit on the palate. Firm dry tannins. Needs quite a bit of time but the wood is rather intrusive at the moment. Drinking range: 2025 - 2032 Rating: 15.5 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2018)

Some berries and dark chocolate with hazelnut undertones. Medium body, firm tannins and a medium finish. Rating: 88-89 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2018)

Château La Croix Saint Georges

A few rows from the iconic Le Pin sits Château La Croix Saint George, that once belonged to the Hospitaliers of Saint Jean de Jerusalem, hence the religious name. It was purchased by the Janoueix family in 1932. Until recent years there were no wine making facilities at La Croix Saint George, with the grapes being carted off to nearby Château La Croix for vinification. When Philippe Janoueix took the reins in 1999, he built proper facilities at La Croix Saint George and the wine is now made and matured on site. The 4.2ha of vineyard are 95% Merlot with the balance being Cabernet Franc, with an average age of 38 years. The wines are aged in 100% new wood, with the barrels being an unusual elongated cigar-shape to allow for more lees contact.
