CHÂTEAU MAZEYRES

2017 Pomerol

Grapes Merlot, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Pomerol & Lalande de Pomerol
Village Pomerol

The 2017 Mazeyres has a very refined bouquet, nicely focused with lifted red fruit, hints of truffle and sous-bois. I like the stylishness of this Pomerol. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, well-judged acidity and seamlessly integrated oak. This is often one of the strongest performers from the western flank of the appellation and the 2017 is no different – a little gem from Alain Moueix. Drinking range: 2021 - 2035 Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2018)

73% Merlot, 24.4% Cabernet Franc, 2.6% Petit Verdot. Deep crimson. Deep, dark and spicy on the nose. Almost savoury in that dark character. Very oaky on the palate, with just enough fruit to balance. Fresh enough but the oak is a little overpowering. Firm, grippy texture. Drinking range: 2025 - 2032 Rating: 16- Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2018)

Bright and fresh, featuring charming plum and anise notes gliding through on a silky structure. Long, with a floral hint on the finish. Pretty and pure. Rating: 90-93 James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator (Apr 2018)

Nice core of fruit and spices. Medium-bodied and fresh and bright on the finish. Nicely done. Rating: 88-89 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2018)

Château Mazeyres

The 18th Century Château Mazeyres stands in the northern outskirts of Libourne and is part of the smallest appellation in the Gironde, Pomerol, widely known for the aromatic intensity of its wines and the typicality of its terroirs inscribed in an exceptional geological ensemble.

The vineyard is located on a beautiful ridge of sandy gravel with a subsoil of serious clay extending onto the plateau of Catusseau, a molasse subsoil that is extremely rich in iron.

Alain Moueix has managed Château Mazeyres since 1992, in which time the château has been renovated, expanded the vineyard from 8 to 25.5ha, and moved the viticulture over toward the biodynamic. The vineyards are 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.
