2017 Cru Bourgeois Pauillac

Grapes Merlot, Cab Sauv
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Pauillac
Classification Cru Bourgeois
ABV 14%

The frost mainly hit the cabernet sauvignon fruit here. A big dependency on Merlot this vintage. 68% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon (normally half and half). Lovely scent of forest fruit. Juicy entry with sweet fruit at the core. The wood is evident and adds an attractive vanilla note to the wine. Rating: 91 L&S (Apr 2018)

The 2017 Pibran is a juicy, absolutely delicious Pauillac to drink now and over the next decade or so. Sweet tobacco, cedar, licorice, mint and dried cherry add pretty aromatic top notes to round things out. The 2017 is not super complex or structured, but it is a wine of immense pleasure and sensuality. I loved it. Drinking range: 2022 - 2032 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Mar 2020)

The 2017 Pibran is aged in 50% new oak and 50% one-year old wood for 18 months. It has a gentle but charming bouquet with more red fruit than I expected given its showing from barrel, more raspberry and wild strawberry. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft rounded opening. Yet, there is ample weight and commendable balance to this Pibran with an almost Burgundy-like purity on the finish. Very fine. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2020)

The 2017 Pibran is aged in 50% new oak for 18 months. It has a crisp, pure blackberry and graphite-scented bouquet that is very precise, one of the most detailed that I have come across with respect to this property. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, chalky tannin. It is not a powerful or deep Pibran, but it is very tensile with an almost flinty finish. Given the reasonable price asked for this Pauillac, this could be one of the buys of 2017. Tasted twice with consistent notes. Drinking range: 2020 - 2035 Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2018)

Château Pibran

Château Pibran, now under the guidance Christian Seely and the AXA-Millesimes team, produces with good complexity, weight and concentration. Its 9.5 hectares of vineyards stretch across a well-drained gravel bank and border those of Mouton-Rothschild, Lynch-Bages and Pontet Canet. They are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (10%) and Petit Verdot (5%). The wines are vinified at Pichon-Baron. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and the wine is matured for 12-15 months in barriques (50% new). Pibran is classified as a cru bourgeois but is now producing wines the equal of many of its more highly classified neighbours.
