2017 Aglianico Luigi Maffini
Luigi continues to knock it out of the park with his wines, endlessly refining and evolving the way he works and the results are superb. This is pure Aglianico, but unlike the ones from further north, soils are sedimentary rather than Volcanic and as a result you get a very different wine. Supple and aromatic this has blueberry, damson and blackberry fruit, there are touches of dark chocolate, herbs and a dark spiciness. In the mouth the wine is sleek and mobile, black fruits once more with some fleshy pluminess, chocolate, spice and herb flecked, it is an absolute joy now and over the next 5 years or so. The nose is dark and spicy, leading off with a savory mix of wild herbs, licorice and black fruits, as cooling minerality comes forward, complemented by hints of orange citrus and dried flowers. On the palate, fleshy textures envelope the senses in a mix of ripe red and blackberry fruits, as brisk acids add energy and a blend of minerals, and young tannin saturates. The finish is long and structured, yet the Kleos maintains a wonderfully fresh persona, as fine tannin lurks beneath an array of ripe black fruits and alluringly dark inner florals. The 2017 Kleos, 100% Aglianico from the Paestum DOC, matures for eight months in neutral French oak before resting in bottle. It’s a gorgeous expression of varietal and place, with a drink-me personality, yet also the ability to excel for years in the cellar. Luigi Maffini's vineyards are on the coast of Campania, south of Naples, across the bay from Positano, and planted with the local grapes, Fiano for the whites and Aglianico for the reds. While the family's first vines were planted in the seventies, the real beginning of this winery dates from 1996.
Luigi and his wife Raffaella are both graduates of Naples university in agricultural sciences. Luigi specialised in viticulture and winemaking. Ten years elapsed between our first tasting of his wines and getting Luigi 'on board', but he has now been with L&S since 2009.
Raffaella and Luigi run the vineyards organically, and share the land with their two children and three dogs, as well as hares, foxes, hedgehogs, hawks and wild boars, with which they are happy to live in peace. There are now two vineyard sites, at Castellabate and Giungano, so some of the wines are DOC Cilento and some DOC Paestum.
