30% whole bunch. Some of this, the Petits Monts and the Amoureuses were vinified in 'vinification integral', like Domaine Henri Boillot is now doing, in barrel. Really old vines. Paler colour than the Charmes. There's a much greater lifted sweet bright elegance to this - energy and tension, red and black fruit, dancing, aromatic black cherry - lovely and very long. L&S (Nov 2019)

This is more obviously 2018 in style with its intensely spicy and notably ripe aromas of plum, cassis and red currant that are markedly floral in character. The lilting and refined middle weight flavors possess evident minerality on the much more complex, longer and firmer finish. This is a beautifully elegant wine and while I often slightly prefer the Griotte chez Drouhin, in 2018 it appears that the Bèze is the more interesting of the two, at least at this early stage. The 2018 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru contains 30% whole cluster this year and comes from both estate and purchased fruit. It has a very ripe nose with touches of fresh prune filtering through the red berry fruit. The palate is ripe and supple in the mouth, quite peppery in style with good acidity, although the finish is just missing the same degree of precision as, say, the 2016 or 2017. This is not the strongest card in Drouhin's hand this year. Drinking range: 2022 - 2035 Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2020)

Deep cherry red. Ripe damson and almost a bit jammy on the nose. A bit fresher on the palate but riper than I like in a fine burgundy. Full, savoury and has freshness in the tannins and a peppery character which helps balance the ripe fruit – good use of stems here. A little warm on the finish (grands crus in 2018 are 13.5–14%). This may get fresher with more time on the lees but at the moment it seems rather flat. Drinking range: 2024 - 2030 Rating: 16.5 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2019)

Domaine Joseph Drouhin

Joseph Drouhin, founded in 1880 and still family owned, are one of the most well-respected names in Burgundy, especially through their flagship wine, the iconic Clos des Mouches.

A huge part of the Drouhin production comes from their own domaine fruit (78 hectares), and much of the rest comes from contracts such as that with the Marquis de Laguiche, who shook hands with the grandfather of the current generation, agreeing to let him manage his vineyards which included an important part of Le Montrachet; this collaboration endures. Today, the fourth generation is at the helm

Small refinements continue to be made here. The presses have been changed - a reversion to basket pressing for the reds, and for whites the presses are open - along with a number of other growers they are following the trend to think that slight oxidation of the juice before fermentation is not a problem and may add complexity as well as avoiding later problems of premature oxidation in bottle.

For the reds there has been the introduction of selective whole-bunch fermentation in the Côte de Nuits wines. The house style remains one that 'emphasises the natural elegance of great Burgundies' as they describe it. The domaine is all cultivated with an organic and biodynamic approach.
