New modern label for this 2018 to celebrate their 20th year. A heady nose of juicy berry fruit and dark plum. There's good concentration on the palate too and it wears the hefty weight of new oak well. Perhaps not the most refined mid-palate but it's full of comforting richness and isn't too heavy. This definitely over-delivers at this level and there's a lovely spicy, fresh finish. One for those that like to curl up on a winter's evening with a dark-fruited, full-bodied red. Drinking range: 2024 - 2032 L&S (Apr 2019)

The 2018 Carlmagnus is a powerful wine with plenty of rich Fronsac fruit and equally big tannins. This is an especially extracted style, but there is good depth. The 2018 will be even better if the burly tannins soften. If not, the 2018 will remain juicy but also rustic and rough around the edges. Tasted two times. Château Carlmagnus is the top property of several owned and run by Arnaud Roux-Oulié. Six and a half hectares of limestone and clay, 100% Merlot, on the slope of a rise close to the Tertre de Fronsac.
