Blackcurrant, clove, dark chocolate and graphite on the nose. Dried violets, too. It’s medium-bodied with firm, tight tannins. Layered and elegant with pretty floral tones. 45% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot, 10% petit verdot and 5% cabernet franc. Try from 2024. Rating: 93 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Feb 2021)

Inky black cherry. Dark-fruited and spicy. Firm, dry, rather lean but the tannins are smooth on the finish. Could become elegant with time, though hard to judge. Drinking range: 2024 - 2030 Rating: 15.5 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2019)

This is a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The yield was just 19 hl/ha, and the alcohol a modest 13.5%. It has a fresh and crunchy style of fruit, rather pretty, with blackcurrant, red cherry and a touch of bay leaf on the nose. The palate continues in this more delicate style, with macerated red cherries, chalk dust, a little wrapping of praline and vanillin oak too, ensconced within a medium bodied texture and supported by a loose bed of lightly chalky tannins bring a touch of grip to the length. Attractive, but lighter, cooler and fresher than some. The élevage will be in 40% new oak and 60% second-fill oak. Rating: 91-93 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2019)

Château Chasse Spleen

Remarkable Chasse-Spleen has always produced high quality wines, which, for the last thirty years, have been worthy of a Third Growth Grand Cru. The English translation of the name of this Cru Bourgeois property is ‘chasing the blues away’, making it one of the most poetic of all names in the Médoc. Owned by Claire Villars, Chasse-Spleen is the leading estate of the little known Moulis appellation, and the wines are of excellent quality. Taking a look around the property (and if you are lucky, being guided round by Jean Pierre Foubet, Claire’s highly entertaining husband) gives you a good idea why they are so well admired. A large estate, although not all plots are next to the château itself; the cellars are impeccably clean, and there is a beautiful tasting room overlooking the barrel cellar and vines.
