CHÂTEAU COUTET

2018 1er Cru Classé Barsac

Colour White
Origin France, Bordeaux
Village Barsac
Classification 1er Cru Classé

Good nose here loaded with beeswax and honeysuckle. This Follows to the palate. There is quite some thickness and depth to the fruit - but not tropical - not too fruity. On the palate more honeycomb and waxy lemons emerge. Good 'Golden Shred' like feel and flavour, not sophisticated nor elegant, but lots to like. L&S (Apr 2019)

A delicate, refined Barsac with dried lemon, apricot and a medium-sweet palate. Medium body. Bright finish. Lighter style of Coutet. Drink now. Rating: 91 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Mar 2021)

Mid gold, cloudy. Orange and apricot suggest a high level of botrytis. Spicy, full-flavoured with those fruits and a touch of barley sugar. A slight grip in the texture. Bold and spicy and just enough freshness to balance. Drinking range: 2025 - 2035 Rating: 16.5 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2019)

Pleasant center palate to this young Barsac. Medium-bodied and very sweet, but lacks a bit of botrytis for me. Rating: 91-92 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2019)

Château Coutet

Barsac Premier Cru 1855 A square tower indicates the origins of Château Coutet as a 13th Century fortification. Indeed the château is a mixture of various styles added at various times in its long history. At the turn of the 19th Century, Château Coutet came into the possession of the Lur-Saluces family, owners of Château d'Yquem, and they owned it until 1923. Since 1977, Coutet has been owned by the Baly family, represented today by brothers Dominique and Philippe. Château Coutet is one of the two Premier Cru properties in Barsac (the other being Château Climens). There are 38.5ha of vineyard, given over 75% Semillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle. Wines are fermented in wood (50% new) and aged for up to 18 months.
