ABV 12%

Clean and quite zingy, lifted with mouth-watering freshness, some grassy-edged fruit and lashings of pert grapefruit that lead to a neat finish This gorgeous white Bordeaux comes from vineyards made up of gravel and seashells. Classic Graves terroir and perfectly suited to the Sémillon and 2 Sauvignons they grow here. In 2018 this is close to Caroline's ideal blend: 60% Sémillon, 30% Sauvignon Blanc & 10% Sauvignon Gris. The wine has a gorgeous texture, a powdery clean feel and good drive for 2018. No oak is used this spends a good stretch ageing in steel on the lees though - you can feel it. Delicious. While the other two whites are £17.95 sensual aperitif whites and perfect for lighter dishes, this white Graves is an extremely grown-up main course number with terrific gravitas and breeding. Often white Bordeaux can be insipid, dry and gutless or, at the other end of the spectrum, massive, oaky and overbearing. The finest examples dwell in the sweet spot between these two extremities. This is an exquisite example of a perfectly balanced white with super sharp, bright and lean citrus coupled with stony minerality and a refreshing, finish. The class on display here is indisputable.Matthew Jukes, Moneyweek (Jul 2020)

Château de Cérons

Ever in the shadow of its illustrious neighbours, the small region of Cérons sits just downstream of Barsac and Sauternes. As the name suggests, the major presence here is the Château de Cérons. In keeping with the location, the tradition has been to make sweet wines (and Château de Cérons do, indeed, make a delightful sweetie) but more interesting perhaps are the immaculate red and dry whites. Brimming with class and a polished finesse - the wines are seriously smart and delicious The property is run by Caroline and Xavier Perromat. Caroline worked at Haut Bailly for 15 years alongside Véronique Sanders - they both arrived there in 1998, but now she is working with her husband with his family estate. This is one to watch in the Graves, with brilliant white wine to rival many Crus Classés, and red of superb refinement and delicacy of tannin. They are working towards a fuller feel to the red wines here, year by year. There is also a small volume of Cérons, the tiny appellation for sweet wine which is a bit lighter and dryer than most Sauternes, refined and very elegant. They farm organically, although are not yet official with this - but the property has just received HVE3 (High Environmental Value) certification.
