CHÂTEAU FERRIÈRE

2018 3ème Cru Classé Margaux

Grapes Petit Verdot, Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Margaux
Classification 3ème Cru Classé
ABV 13%

68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc all from just 16 hectares of biodynamically grown grapes. We make no secret of our admiration for this small Margaux estate but the team have outdone themselves in 2018. This is a fantastic Ferrière full of deep, cool dark fruit with only a hint at the ripeness of the vintage. There is lovely flow across the velvety mid-palate and some really fine tannins that bolster rather than overwhelm the fruit. This is a serious Margaux with a long and hugely promising life ahead of it. Definitely one to watch. Drinking range: 2025 - 2040 L&S (Apr 2019)

The 2018 Ferrière is a powerful, tightly wound wine. Inky dark fruit, gravel, cured meats, graphite, smoke and lavender all run through the 2018. Readers will have to be especially patient, as the 2018 needs time to unwind. Yields are down from an average of 45 hectoliters per hectare to just 26, which no doubt contributes to the wine's natural intensity. The blend is 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, in other words, the Cabernet Sauvignon is especially high, a recent trend here because of climate change. This is the first year in which a portion of the wine was aged in cement and amphora (20%), which according to Claire Lurton allows for lower SO2 in aging. Drinking range: 2026 - 2048 Rating: 94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Mar 2021)

Aromas of blackberries and black olives with grapey undertones. Graphite as well. It’s tight and full-bodied, yet very polished and refined. Creamy texture. Just a hint of tar on the finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Tiny production. Try after 2025. Rating: 95 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Feb 2021)

Barrel sample. Deep, dark cherry red. A little more lifted and floral than La Gurgue but still with concentrated dark fruit. Dark and rocky and mineral on the palate, finely textured tannins, dusty in a good way. Layer upon layer of tannins. Big and firm and dry on the finish. Needs lots of time for the oak to recede but it has the freshness to balance, even if the freshness comes partly from the tannins. Drinking range: 2028 - 2038 Rating: 16.5+ Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2019)

Château Ferrière

Margaux Troisième cru 1855 The Ferrière family owned their eponymous estate from its origins in the 18th Century right up until 1914. During the 20th Century, Château Ferrière's star fell considerably with the vineyard leased to Alexis Lichine and the wine made at Château Lascombes, and Château Ferrière was rarely seen or known outside France. Ferrière was purchased by the Taillan Group (who own, among others, Gruaud-Larose and Chasse-Spleen) in 1988, and the story since then has been of continued improvement. The connection with Château Lascombes was ended and all wines are made at Château Ferrière now. Château Ferrière is the smallest of the Cru Classé estates, with just 8ha of vines dispersed around the centre of Margaux village. 80% are Cabernet Sauvignon, with 15% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. The Grand Vin spends 18 months in wood (60% new). Both in terms of quality and availability, Château Ferrière is unrecognisable from where it was a few short years ago. Classic, gently assertive Margaux and excellent value for money.
