Very beautiful aromas of blackberries and crushed stones with hints of dried flowers. It’s full-bodied with soft, creamy tannins that are softly knit. Round, creamy finish. Drinking range: 2023 - Rating: 92 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Château La Garde is impressive and reveals a glass-staining purple color as well as tons of black fruits (there’s some red fruit as well), spice, leather, and earthy nuances. Medium to full-bodied, it’s beautifully textured, has outstanding balance, nicely integrated tannins and acidity, and a great finish. It’s another terrific Pessac-Léognan that’s going to dish out plenty of pleasure with just a few years of bottle age and keep for 10-15 years. Rating: 91-93 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (May 2019)

Barrel sample. Black core with purple rim. Both ripe black fruit and a more savoury charry note, yet slightly floral as it opens. Tastes rather oaky, and the layers of tannin giving a chalky effect but it's fresh and has potential – just needs time. Bags of black fruit to keep the tannins apart. Drinking range: 2025 - 2033 Rating: 16.5 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2019)

Château La Garde

Château La Garde is a medium-sized property with 47 hectares of vineyards in Pessac-Léognan, planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. The Cabernet-dominated red wines are soft, well structured and packed with smooth, ripe fruit which makes them very attractive young, though they also possess good medium-term cellaring potential. Bought by the dynamic Bordeaux merchant Dourthe in the 1980s, this gem of an estate displays the true Graves minerality underneath an exuberant cassis-and-plums aroma. After huge initial investment in the vineyard and cellar immense care is now lavished upon the wine itself, and any re-assessment of the Pessac-Léognan classification would surely see this wine elevated to Cru Classé status
