CHÂTEAU LA GURGUE

2018 Cru Bourgeois Supérieur Margaux

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Margaux
Classification Cru Bourgeois Supérieur
ABV 13.5%

57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot. Biodynamically grown with volumes down 20% due to the mildew. This is one of the best La Gurgues we can remember tasting en primeur. The extra warmth of the vintage has added more body and form to the moreish dark fruit. It's still on the lighter side but it's pure, concentrated and has more texture to the mid-palate than usual. Tannins are nicely integrated too. Definitely one to keep an eye on as this is often a very well-priced Cru Bourgeois. Drinking range: 2025 - 2035 L&S (Apr 2019)

The 2018 La Gurgue is one of the little jewels of Margaux. Pliant, supple and inviting, the 2018 has so much to offer. All the elements are wonderfully fused together. Ripe red cherry, blood orange, mint and sweet floral notes all build as this racy Margaux shows off its sensuality and charm. Mildew was especially severe, and yields were just 12 hectoliters per hectare, but the wine is superb. The blend is 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 8% Petit Verdot. Drinking range: 2023 - 2038 Rating: 93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Mar 2021)

Colour of elderberry juice. Dark and charry but not particularly oaky, just more savoury. Chewy but surprisingly fresh, a touch of something floral and savoury at the same time. Firm, dry, dark-fruited. Tannins are compact and dense but not heavy, though the whole seems to lack juice. Drinking range: 2025 - 2033 Rating: 16 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2019)

This is dense and layered with a velvety texture and very rich palate. Powerful yet fresh. Creamy and minerally. Unique Gurgue. From biodynamically grown grapes. Rating: 93-94 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2019)
