CHÂTEAU SIGALAS RABAUD

2018 1er Cru Classé Sauternes

Colour White
Origin France, Bordeaux
Village Sauternes
Classification 1er Cru Classé

Pure pear fruit on the nose. Full of tangy apricot and bitter orange, zesty rather than particularly fresh, but fresh enough. Deep and satisfying rather than elegant. Intense and long. Drinking range: 2023 - 2038 Rating: 16.5 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2019)

This is vivid and lively with spicy and dried-mushroom character. Medium-to full-bodied. Very sweet yet fresh at the end. Rating: 92-93 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2019)

This is lovely, a success in the vintage and one of the best on display, offering a silky texture and clear emphasis on precision and grip, with high notes of lime and citrus on the nose. It has mango and peach on the attack followed by creamy lemon as it spins out through the palate. The acidity doesn't quite spiral downwards and upwards as in the best years, but you do get great lift through the palate and a persistency to the flavours. This is an estate that really has been doing huge amounts of work on its flavour profiles recently, saving only its very best grapes and terroirs for the sweet wine. Drinking range: 2022 - 2042 Rating: 96 Jane Anson, Decanter (Apr 2019)

This is 85% Semillon and 15% Sauvignon Blanc. There is a dark and almost roasted character to the nose to this barrel sample, showing a bright, bold and peppery style, with a salted white peach character. The palate is fresh, charming, bright, rich in light-golden fruits, with lots of apricot and grilled yellow peach, all sprinkled with peppery minerals and energy. A great result here, sweet and yet polished, vivacious and bright. A very modern style, rich and yet lifted and elegant, and certainly an impressive result in this vintage. In fact it is absolutely delicious. Rating: 95-97 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2019)

Château Sigalas Rabaud

Sauternes Premier Cru 1855 At 14ha, Sigalas-Rabaud is the smallest of the Premier Cru Sauternes estates. It has been owned by the same family since Henri de Sigalas purchased Château Rabaud in 1863. His son, Pierre, sold off a good portion of the estate in 1903 to Adrien Promis, giving rise to the neighbouring Château Rabaud-Promis. Oddly, between 1929 and 1949, the two estates employed the same Estate Manager and they were virtually run as one, but they are today quite seperate. The vineyards are planted with 98% Semillon and just 2% Sauvignon Blanc. The influence of oak in Sigalas-Rabaud is, perhaps, a little lower than other Sauternes. Until 1990, wines were fermented in stainless-steel and aged only partially in wood. Even today, although fermented and aged in barrique, only a third of barrels are new each year.
