CHÂTEAU TALBOT

2018 4ème Cru Classé Saint Julien

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Julien
Classification 4ème Cru Classé
ABV 13%

66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot. The first full vintage under the watchful eye of Jean-Michel Laporte (ex-Conseillante). He added around 10% more new oak because the natural extract of the vintage was so impressive. This has a lovely mix of blackberry, dark cherry and damson fruit. Very cool and crisp. Then comes a beautifully creamy mid-palate - really suave, not a sharp edge in sight. It flows steadily toward a long, mouthwatering finish. Laporte's magic is certainly working here. This is a really good Talbot showing a lot of class. One of our favourite Saint Julien in 2018. Drinking range: 2025 - 2045 L&S (Apr 2019)

66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot. Special dark coloured, engraved, centenary bottle to mark the 100 years of Cordier ownership. Deep purple-black hue. Big and rich with a crème de cassis nuance. Plenty of mid-palate volume and gras. Big tannic frame so powerful in style. More modern in concept than the other vintages. Clearly for long cellaring. (JL) 14.5% Drinking range: 2028 - 2048 Rating: 17+ James Lawther MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2022)

Not only is the 2018 Talbot the first vintage in which Jean-Michel Laporte was fully in charge, but it comes in a uniquely designed bottle to celebrate the centennial of ownership by the Cordier family. Fortunately, its contents make the grade. This Talbot is well defined and focused on the nose, offering blackberry, bilberry and cedar scents and an attractive floral component that becomes more evident with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and cohesive, with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity and good depth. Layers of blackberry and cranberry fruit intertwine with cedar and touches of graphite on the finish, completing an excellent Talbot that may improve further with bottle age. Drinking range: 2023 - 2045 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Talbot is quite the powerhouse. Inky and deep, the 2018 possesses striking textural richness from start to finish. Inky dark fruit, licorice, cloves, new leather, menthol, violet and chocolate fill out the layers effortlessly in this decidedly flashy Saint-Julien. This is a terrific effort for Technical Director Jean-Michel Laporte in his first vintage at Talbot. It will be interesting to see where the château goes in future years. This is certainly an opulent, rich style. Drinking range: 2028 - 2048 Rating: 93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Mar 2021)

Château Talbot

St Julien Quatrième cru 1855

John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury was sent by King Henry VI to re-impose some English rule on this troublesome part of his Kingdom, but ended up being killed at the Battle of Castillon in 1453. Quite what connection he had with this particular bit of St Julien is unknown but, at least as far back as the 17th Century, the large estate in the centre of the appellation has been known as Château Talbot and it has generally been held that it was named for said John Talbot.

Désiré Cordier bought Talbot in 1917 and it is still in the hands of the Cordier family.

Sitting right in the middle of St Julien, surrounded by the great names of the appellation, and at 107ha of vineyard, Château Talbot is hard to miss. The vineyards are planted to 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Fermentation takes place in a combination of traditional wooden vats and modern stainless steel, with the Grand Vin spending 14 months in oak (50%-60% new).

There is a second wine named in honour of John Talbot, who's local title was Connétable Talbot.

With such big production and with an easy name to read and remember in the English-speaking market, Château Talbot has a healthy following and reliable reputation. It is a reputation that Talbot, by and large, lives up to with well-flavoured structured wines.
